Street tree felling rates since 2017

mary gagen made this Freedom of Information request to Denbighshire County Council Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

The request was partially successful.

Dear Denbighshire County Council,

In 2017 journalist Dean Kirby gathered, through FOI, information on the average rate of street tree felling across the UK and used the information to derive a figure of an average of 58 trees per day being felled across UK local authorities. https://inews.co.uk/news/environment/rev...

That figure is now out of date and I am seeking new figures to update that 2017 estimate.

Please could you share with me how many street trees your Council has felled, each year, since 2017 and their size categorisation (e.g. semi-mature, mature). Please only include trees in parks, car parks, gardens, or on the Highways/verges. Please also include an estimate of how many Highways located tree pits have been closed/lost etc.

Whilst not part of this request, you are welcome to also send information on your tree planting/re-planting rates, but if so please be sure to include the comparison difference between the size/species of what was felled and what was re-planted.

With best wishes,

Mary Gagen

Denbighshire County Council

Denbighshire County Council

Dear Mary Gagen

Thank you for your request for environmental information received
07/10/2024 concerning street tree felling 2017 - current. Please see
below:

Trees and Woodlands response:
Our records only go back to 2020, when our Team was appointed, and what we
have on street trees and their removal is undoubtedly an incomplete
picture as we may not have been consulted or been aware of works that have
taken place.

That said we have recorded 35 trees, that we believe meet the criteria
specified, which have been felled since 2020. Of these, 2 were newly
planted, 4 Young, 21 Early Mature and 8 Mature.

Of these we would estimate 3 or 4 were within the footway, possibly in a
tree pit, which has now been closed.

Streetscene response:
No records held, the vast majority of trees that we fell are due to storm
damage and locations are not recorded.

If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact
me.

If you have any queries regarding this response, please do not hesitate to
contact me at the following address: Access to Information Officer, PO BOX

council has handled your request and wish to ask for internal review,
please contact the Legal Services Manager at the same address. If you are
subsequently not content with the outcome of the review, you have the
right to apply to the Information Commissioner whose address is Wycliffe
