Street Signs
Dear Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council,
I do apologise for the seemingly trivial nature of this request. I'm interested in street signs, as this is one area through which local authorities use graphic design to enhance placemaking.
I note:
* Most street name signs in Walsall are brown, with white text.
* On Birmingham Road (A34), some street name plates are white, and include a crest and postcode.
* Some older street name signs are white, with the street name in sans serif typefaces.
Please could you provide:
1* The current specification for street name plates.
2* For street name plates of the type on Birmingham Road (A34):
— A: the specification
— B: any documents relating to that specification and its merits
3* Any policies, or policy considerations, relating to the style of street name plates.
I appreciate that 2B and 3 are potentially confusing. If you are in doubt, please proceed with 1, and supply me with any information that falls in scope — if you are struggling, please liaise with the necessary officers and provide me with any tips that I could use to narrow down my request.
I do appreciate this might seem trivial — but it is part of my wider research into the ways in which UK local authorities place make.
Yours faithfully,
Robert Y Chen

and provide me with any tips that I could use to narrow down my request.
1) I have attached copies of our Street Nameplate Specification and
Standard Detail WSD-1217 revision 1, which sets out the current Walsall
Council requirements for street nameplates. Broadly speaking, this style
of nameplate has been in use in the Borough for over 30 years.
2) Historically, other nameplate styles have been used, but we don’t
have details on their specification.
3) Where new nameplates are required in heritage areas, efforts may be
made to match any pre-existing nameplate style. There is no hard & fast
rule over this though. Generally, nameplates should conform to The
Department for Transport Circular Roads 3/93 - “STREET NAME PLATES AND
THE NUMBERING OF PREMISES”.
