Dear Ms. Bottle

Freedom of Information Act 2000 – Request for Information - 856

Thank you for your request for information received on the 16^th March
2012.  Please find the information requested below:

How many stray dogs entered pounds between 1st January 2010 and

31st December 2010?

506

How many of these were reclaimed by their owners?

149

How many were adopted from the pound?

See below

How many went to an animal rescue?

357 - Of those, 283 were adopted.

How many were euthanized?

52 - The kennel contractor is responsible for disposing of a stray dog
which has been accommodated at his establishment for not less than 7 clear
days and not been claimed. The contractor must make every reasonable
endeavour to find a suitable home for a stray dog before consideration is
given to euthanizing a dog.

What happened to any remaining dogs that did not fall into above

categories?

22 dogs did not fall into the above categories, and this will be due to
long-term occupation within kennels without a defined fate before data is
returned to the council.

In accordance with the procedures of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough
Council (RMBC), I am advising you that the cost to the authority in
responding to this request has been £21.87 which reflects the staff time
and administration costs involved. RMBC however does not currently make

Dear Ms Hotsman,

Can you please clarify your answers to questions 3 and 4.
In this instance the 'pound' in the request are the holding kennels that stray dogs are taken to after being collected.
'Rescue' is where dogs are rehomed after assessment, neutering, vaccination etc.
These two are different.
Please also would it be possible to change the phrase "disposing of a stray dog" to "future of a stray dog" as, without being sentimental, you are refering to a living being.
Thank you for your continued assistance.

Yours sincerely,

Carla Bottle

Dear Carla Bottle

I refer to your request for clarification relating to Qs 3 & 4 of our recent FOI response to you and provide the following explanation.

In this instance our contract with the stray kennels means that after seven days ownership of the dog is transferred to them.

The stray kennels make attempts to rehome the dog to new owners and also work with other rescue centres to reach a satisfactory outcome. We do operate a zero euthanising policy, however sometimes this is not possible - mainly due to unsuitability for rehoming after assessment.

The stray kennel operators operate procedures to undertake neutering, vaccination and assessment of each dog which is transferred to their ownership.

For the purpose of our records once the dog is in ownership of the stray kennels they are 'rehomed'. This does change if we agree to put a dog to sleep humanely (the contractors have a duty to inform our officers so appropriate steps can be agreed), however to export and analyse the fate of each dog to ascertain actual rescue outlet (either the stray kennel or partnering centre) would take well in excess of the maximum cost as detailed in the Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004 as this information is held in hard copy only, which would mean sourcing, reading and analysing the individual record for each of the dogs we seized in the stipulated period.

I hope that this helps to clarify the position.

Yours sincerely

Christine Hotson
