Dear Pat James

Freedom of Information Act 2000 – Ref: 2387/1617

Thank you for your correspondence received on 14 February 2017. In
response to your request I can now provide the following information.

Q1. the total number of Council Tax defaulters for the financial year
2015/2016 only;

A1. We are unable to provide you with the number of households that the
uncollected amounts of Council Tax represent. We do not calculate
collection performance in this way and therefore, do not hold this
information. Collection is calculated as a percentage of the overall debit
that is to be collected each year and this is sufficient to identify
trends and monitor performance against targets

Q2. the total value of outstanding Council Tax for the financial year
2015/2016 only.

A2. The information we have provided is as at the 31.1.2017. The amount of
uncollected Council Tax for the financial year 2015/16 is £2,036,386.74,
which equates to a current collection rate of 97.69%. It is worth noting
that the amount uncollected at the end of March 2016, for the financial
year 2015/16 was £3,128,513.65, equating to a collection rate of 96.50%.
This demonstrates the Council’s commitment to continue to collect Council
Tax arrears. Long term collection rates usually exceed 99%.

If you have any queries or concerns please contact me in the first
instance.

However, if you are unhappy with the way your request for information has
been handled, you can submit a complaint to [1][Stockton on Tees Council request email]

If, after your complaint has been determined, you remain dissatisfied with
the handling of your request or complaint, you have a right to appeal to
