Statistics relating to UK Uyghurs residents and asylum seekers
Dear Home Office,
I am requesting this FOI on behalf of Index on Censorship*(1) - a non-profit that protects and defends freedom of expression globally. We are requesting access to the following information for research we are currently conducting into the extent to which Chinese authorities might be intimidating or harassing Uyghur people in Europe in an effort to silence their dissent. To this end, we are requesting access to information that will enable us to understand the extent/breadth of the Uyghur diaspora in the UK
To be included in your response to our FOI request:
- The number of successful Uyghur asylum seekers who are now UK residents?
- The total number of asylum applications made by Chinese nationals of the Uyghur minority to the Home Office on an annual basis. Please give us the data for these years respectively: (1) 2020 (2) 2019 (3) 2018 (4) 2017.
- The number of failed Uyghur asylum seeking applications since January 2017?
- The number of Uyghur individuals who were denied asylum in the UK who, since January 2017], were deported after their application was rejected.
- The number of Uyghur asylum seekers that are currently being processed by the Home Office?
Releasing this information is in the interest of British society. As a democratic country who has officially recognised a genocide is being committed against Turkic-Muslim people in North West China, there is a moral and legal imperative to ensure the Uyghur diaspora is being protected by the UK Government. We want to understand how secure and safe Uyghurs feel living in the UK.
We are interested in this information as it will allow us to gain a greater understanding of the extent to which individuals belonging to the Uyghur minority who are UK residents might be targets of efforts by the Chinese authorities to silence dissent.
Many thanks for dealing with our request.
Yours Faithfully,
Index on Censorship

Dear Home Office,
I would like to reduce the scope of my questions.
Please answer:
1. The total number of asylum applications made by Chinese nationals of the Uyghur
minority to the Home Office on an annual basis. Please give us the data for these
years respectively: (1) 2020 (2) 2019 (3) 2018 (4) 2017.
* To clarify - we are not asking for proportions accepted/rejected but simply the total number.
2. - The number of failed Uyghur asylum seeking applications in the year of 2020 (Jan 1st - Dec 31st)?
Yours faithfully,
Flo Marks
