Statistics on number plate theft

We're waiting for Paris Wellings to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear West Mercia Police,

I am writing to you to gather information on the statistics of number plate theft in the Herfordshire and Worcestershire area in the last 5 years.

I would also be interested in knowing how many of these thefts then involved other crimes, with the stolen number plate being used.

Many thanks.

Yours faithfully,
Paris Wellings

Dear Sir/Madam
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: 9241
I write in connection with your request for information which was received
on 15^th January 2018.  Please find below the response to your request:
1. I am writing to you to gather information on the statistics of number
plate theft in the Herefordshire and Worcestershire area in the last 5
years.
REPLY: A search of force systems has been conducted for offences with a
Recorded Date between 01/01/2013 and 03/10/2017 ignoring No Crimes where
the Property Category was equal to 'VEHICLE PARTS/ACCESSORIES' and the
Property Sub Category was equal to 'REGISTRATION PLATES' and the Division
was equal to 'C', 'D' or 'E'. Locations were removed that are not in
Worcestershire or Herefordshire.
The Number of Instances of Stolen Registration Plates has been presented
by County and Year and the Number of Offences of Stolen Registration
Plates by County and Year in the attached tables.
Some of the offences involved theft of registration plates from more than
vehicle.
Data is not currently available from October 2017 due to the changeover to
a new recording system.
2. I would also be interested in knowing how many of these thefts then
involved other crimes, with the stolen number plate being used.
REPLY: Please be advised that the information that you have requested is
not available in a readily retrievable format. Information regarding how
many thefts then involved other crimes, with the stolen number plate being
used, is not held centrally or in an electronically retrievable format. It
would require a manual review of all the incident and offence records in
order for us to try to identify the relevant information for your request.

amount to which we are legally required to respond i.e. the cost of
locating and retrieving the information exceeds the ‘appropriate level’ as

as a Refusal Notice for this part of the request and if one part of a
request exceeds the fees limit then S12 of the Act applies to the whole
request
However, In accordance with Section 16 of the Act I have a duty to provide
advice and assistance in relation to your request and have provided the
information requested for question 1 as this was retrieved during our
initial research. This should not be taken as a precedent that additional
information would be supplied outside of the time/fees legislation for any
subsequent requests
Every effort has been made to ensure that the information provided by our
SSI Department is as accurate as possible
Your attention is drawn to the below which details your right of
complaint.
