Ref No. FOI/2016/433

27 October 2016

Dear Carol-Ann Morgan

Thank you for your request for information from the Nursing and Midwifery
Council (NMC). Your request was received on 17^th October 2016 and dealt
with under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOI Act).

You asked:

“I am conducting some research and wondering if i could obtain the
following:

the number of nurse registrations in England, Wales, Scotland and N
Ireland the number of Advanced Nurse Practitioners the type of employer of
these (ie NHS Trust, GP practice, Private health company, business,
prisons, care homes etc)”

Response:

We can provide statistics for the number of initial registrants from a
given location and the number of registrants who have listed a particular
country as their country of residence, however neither of these will
provide completely accurate information on where they are practising. The
latter, whilst being a potentially closer match to country of employment,
is also an incomplete data set as many registrants do not include their
country of residence in their given details. Despite this, I have provided
both datasets in the attached spreadsheet.

With regards to the other aspects of your request, employer information is
being gathered as part of Revalidation. As Revalidation only commenced
this year we have not yet gathered this data for the majority of nurses
and midwives. This information will only ever reflect the employment up to
the nurse or midwife's last revalidation. Advanced Nurse Practitioner is a
job title as opposed to a qualification and as such is not included on the
register.

For more information regarding Revalidation, please see:

Please contact me if you have any further queries regarding this
information.

Kind regards,
