Dear Sanaz

Further to your recent request for information, the University’s response

the 2019-2020 academic year?

1400

2. How many Tier 4 international students have contacted the student
funding services to report difficulties with paying their tuition fees on
time?

We do not hold this information

3. What sort of assistance is in place for Tier 4 international students
who are unable to pay their tuition fees?

Where a student advised that there were facing financial difficulties we
were able to  offer extended payment plans and all sanctions for overdue
2019/20 tuition fees were held from March through to the end of the
academic year (and beyond for those students taking resits).

3. What sort of COVID-19 provisions are in place for Tier 4 international
students? Please answer for the following:

a. Health and wellbeing, including mental health

All Health and Wellbeing services are available for all students including
international students,  with the exception that international students
currently based overseas cannot access counselling.

b. Immigration advice

The Student Immigration Adviser continues to support international
students on a remote basis and is using Skype for Business and email to
correspond with students.  International students are advised to check the
Visa and Immigration Advice pages on the student portal for current
updates and advice due to Covid-19.  In addition, students are referred to
UKCISA advice:

c. Other, please elaborate

4. Is the university providing hardship funds for Tier 4 international
students? If yes, please also answer the following:

a. How many Tier 4 international students applied for hardship funds?

The University does not generally offer hardship funds for Tier 4
International students.  Exceptionally, we may offer an emergency grants
of up to £500 at the discretion of the Money Advisers if the student is
experiencing short term financial difficulty with their living costs.
However as a result of the Covid-19 crisis, Summer Emergency Grants (SEG)
were opened up to all students, including Tier 4 international students,
over the summer.  Approximately 1300 SEG applications were received from
international students (NB The data held does not differentiate between
Tier 4 and other non-EU international students).

b. How many Tier 4 international students were granted hardship funds?

From September 2019 to May 2020 we approved 11 emergency grants to
international students.  However with the opening of the SEG this number
increased to a total of 1,172 awards up to the end of August 2020. (NB The
data held does not differentiate between Tier 4 and other non-EU
international students).

c. If a Tier 4 international student was denied a hardship fund, what were
the primary reasons for this?

A Tier 4 international student would be denied an emergency grant if their
request was for support for tuition fees or if their financial
difficulties were not short-term.

5. Have any Tier 4 international students been reported to the Home Office
during the COVID-19 lockdown? If yes, how many?
