Statistics of Medicine Applicants

The request was successful.

Dear Churchill College, Cambridge,

I am making a request regarding statistics for the A100 UCAS cycle.
All requests are for the 2011/2012 cycle unless stated otherwise.
Thank you.

1) For each applicant who was unsuccessful in obtaining an
interview, can I get a list of their BMAT score, their GCSE's, and
predicted A Level results and subjects studied as well as UMS marks
in their subjects.
2)For each applicant who was successful in obtaining an interview,
can I get a list of their BMAT score, their GCSE's, and predicted A
Level results and subjects studied as well as UMS marks.
3) Can I get a list of criteria that the interviewers looked at
during the interview to determine a candidates suitability?
4) How was the interview scored? Was it a score out of 10 by each
interviewer or anything along those lines?
5) For each applicant who was successful in obtaining an offer, can
I get a list of their BMAT score, their GCSE's, and predicted A
Level results and subjects studied and UMS marks as well as their
score in the interview stage?
6) I would also like any scoring or grading system used to assess
interview performance and if a form or such is provided to
interviewers to record performance is available I would also kindly
request this. This specific request is for this years admission
cycle, ie 2012/2013.
7) Finally I would also like to kindly know the weightings (if
there are strict 'points' systems in place or more loose
preferences of which criteria is more important) of candidates' UMS
average at AS, the weighting of their Interview score and the
weighting of their BMAT score. ie which is more important in
deciding if a candidate gets an offer.

Yours faithfully,

Mr Miah

Richard Partington, Churchill College, Cambridge

Dear Mr Miah,

I am responding to your request for information regarding Medical
admissions to Churchill College.

We do not retain, beyond each admissions round, information regarding
Churchill applicants whose applications are unsuccessful, other than in
the form of summary statistics.

While we do, of course, retain information about successful applicants,
that is personal information that should not be disclosed under the
terms of Freedom of Information. (The individuals concerned could be
readily identified.)

I am more than happy to confirm, however, that GCSE results, AS Level
UMS, BMAT performance and performance at interview, as well as UCAS
reference, are all factored into our decision-making process. There is
no formal algorithm for this, as judgment is academic and holistic. In
practice, the four most important factors are UMS, UCAS reference, BMAT
and interview performance. I can also confirm that, overall, the average
scores attained by applicants who are successful ordinarily exceed those
of applicants who are unsuccessful. This applies to GCSEs, UMS, BMAT,
interview and UCAS reference.

So far as UCAS reference is concerned, we score these on a score of 1-5,
where 1 is a weak reference and 5 is an exceptional one.

Interviews are scored on a standard scale as follows:

10 Outstanding
9 Very strong
8 Strong: worth an offer
7 Probably worth an offer
6 Possibly worth an offer
5 Probably not worth an offer
4 Weak
3 and below Unacceptable

Yours sincerely,

Richard Partington.
