Statistics in and relating to PRC 1125

The request was successful.

Dear University of Cambridge,

Please supply all information requested in this request in electronic form, and to this e-mail address. If exact figures for any of the items requested below aren't available, I am prepared to accept approximate figures, or figures derived from the University's HR record systems (or any other relevant electronic records), provided you indicate this in your response.

PRC 1125, supplied by the University [1], states: "The number of computing support staff in the University has risen every year for the last decade or more. There are now 386 in total. This represents approximately one computer officer for every four members of academic staff."

I assume from this that the University must possess the figures for the number of computing support staff for each year of the past decade. Using whatever definition of "year" is used in the extract from PRC 1125 quoted above, please tell me (a) the number of computing support staff and (b) the number of administrative staff in the University for each year dating back to 1999 or 1998-99 (inclusive), as appropriate.

Please also supply (c) the figure and definition used for "academic staff" in the ratio given above.

Please also supply the figures for:

(d) all non-computing support staff in the University (excluding those staff classed as "manual" or "domestic"),

(e) the figure for full-time equivalent students, and

(f) the ratio of administrative staff to academic staff

for the same time period as the figure for "academic staff" (and using the same definition of "academic staff") used in the calculation of the ratio above.

Please also supply (g) the figure for the number of active Common Registration Service identifiers [2], active on the date that the section of PRC 1125 containing the statements quoted above was written, or as close to that date as possible. (Please also specify the date for the figure you supply.)

Finally, in footnotes 1 and 2 in PRC 1125, the source of financial figures is given as "Chest Expenditure Budget (TBB)". Please (h) explain the term "TBB".

Yours faithfully,

Bruce Beckles

Dear University of Cambridge,

For the avoidance of doubt, if the figures for (d), (e) and (f) are not available for the time period in question, I will accept them (or reasonable estimates) for as close to the relevant date as possible, provided you indicate this, and the date for which you have provided those figures, in your response.

Yours faithfully,

Bruce Beckles

Dear University of Cambridge,

If you have already obtained the figure for (g), then please feel free to ignore this e-mail. However, to save you having to process a further Freedom of Information request from me subsequently, if this figure has not yet been produced then you may wish to take the following into account:

Since making my request, it has occurred to me that the active Common Registration Service identifiers may include accounts which are not associated with a specific individual, e.g. accounts used for attendees at training courses, etc. If possible, please either indicate how many of these "non-personal" accounts are included in the figure for (g) (a reasonable estimate is sufficient, provided you indicate it is an estimate), or else please exclude such accounts in the figure you give for (g). I.e. what I really want to know is the number of active Common Registration Service identifiers for individuals, not those for training course accounts, test accounts, etc.

Apologies for not thinking of this possibility earlier - as I say, if it is too late for this to be taken into account, that's fine. I would appreciate it if, in your response to my request, you indicate whether or not you have taken this into account.

Yours faithfully,

Bruce Beckles
