Dear Lara,
Thank you for your email requesting the following data and please find the
response below:
Under the Freedom of Information Act, I request the following information
about all instances of sexual misconduct reported by students at the
University of Manchester from 2015/2016 until the end of the 2019/20
academic year inclusive.
Prior to the release of the UUK “Changing the Culture” report in late
2016, the University did not have a mechanism for recording this data
centrally. Following the release of the report, the University reviewed
its processes and implemented the recommended changes to take effect for
the next possible academic year (i.e. from September 2017). In 2018-19,
the University set up a new service to provide specialist support to
students who have experienced sexual violence. This service takes a
victim-led approach and provides tailored support without the requirement
to report formally or make a complaint. In 2019/20 a new [1]Procedure on
Handling Allegations of Sexual Misconduct took effect. Due to the wording
of the request and the nature of the questions (i.e. outcomes), only those
figures of students who have chosen to engage with a formal reporting
process have been included:
- The number of reported instances of sexual assault
2017/18: 6 (NB It is not possible to separate out offences between rape
and Sexual Assault for this year as the records are held as “sexual
misconduct” only)
2018-2019: 4
2019-2020: 5
- The number of reported instances of rape
(Including but not limited to those that took place within university
operated premises, such as the students union, venues and halls of
residence)
2017-2018: see answer above
2018-2019: 2
2019-2020: 1
- Statistics of whether the perpetrator was a student or member of staff
2017-2018: 6 = student
2018-2019: 4 = student, 2 = staff
2019-2020: 6 = student
- How many of these result in expulsion for the perpetrator
1 case. Please note that a number of cases are still ongoing so do not yet
have an outcome
How many of these have been referred to the Police
NB. We take a victim-led and trauma-informed approach so would not refer a
case to the police against a victim’s wishes and without their consent
unless we considered there to be a high-level of risk to others (for
example, multiple reports naming the same perpetrator)
Zero
I hope you find the above helpful.
With best regards
Lisa
