Statistics for protected rock art by year and name of protective instruments for Wales

Dear Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales,

I would like to make a request under the freedom of information (FOI) act for a dataset in spreadsheet or csv form detailing each identified panel/single motif of rock art (e.g., cup(s); cups and rings or grooves, groove-marked, carved or incised rock, or rock scribing or carving) that has any form of protection in Wales, the name of the protective instrument (e.g., statute, framework, policy), and the year the rock art was first protected by the said instrument.

I currently am aware of the following protective instruments in Wales; please let me know if others exist that would protect rock art regardless of whether any rock art is currently being protected by them.

1. Historic Environment Act 2016
2. Ancient Monuments & Archaeological Areas Act 1979
3. Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990
4. Town and Country Planning Act 1990
5. Planning Act 2015
6. Planning Policy Wales, Chapter 6: The Historic Environment Edition 9
7. Technical Advice Note (TAN) 24: The Historic Environment (2017)
8. Best Practice Guidance documents - https://cadw.gov.wales/historicenvironme...

I would prefer to receive this information electronically.

If one part of this request can be answered sooner than others, please send that information first followed by any subsequent data. If FOI requests of a similar nature already exist, then could you please include your responses to those requests.

If you need any clarification then please email me. Under your section 16 duty to provide advice and assistance I would expect you to contact me if you find this request unmanageable in any way so we can negotiate how best to proceed.

I would be grateful if you could confirm in writing that you have received this request, and I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Sincerely,

Myra Giesen

Dear Myra Giesen,

Thank you for your enquiry concerning protected rock art in Wales. Whilst
RCAHMW compiles and makes available the National Monuments Record as a
public database and archive of records relating to the historic
environment of Wales (searchable here: [1]Coflein) it does not record the
information that you request. Cadw, the Welsh Government’s historic
environment service, who are responsible for the legal protection of
monuments, will maintain such records. These can be searched online here:
[2]Cof Cymru and include scheduling records for sites such as cup marked
stones.

I hope this information is of help,

Best wishes,

Gareth Edwards
