Statistics for academic misconduct

The request was successful.

Dear Aberystwyth University,

1. What are your institution’s current FTE student numbers?
2. How many students were caught for any forms of academic misconduct over the last five years, broken down year-by-year? If it is possible to specify the offences committed, please do so.
3. Which punishments were given to these students?
4. Does your institution use Turnitin for assessment? If so, do all academic departments use it?

If it is possible to provide data for Q2 and Q3 by Home/EU and Overseas student and UG/PG student, please do so.

Yours faithfully,

Kevin Wilson

Dear Info Compliance [infstaff],

Thanks very much. I was wondering if I could make one small amendment? With the student numbers, could this be broken down into Home/EU and International?

Yours sincerely,

Kevin Wilson

Dear Mr Wilson,

I am writing in response to your recent requests for information under the
Freedom of Information Act 2000 (‘the Act’).  I apologise for the delay in
providing this information.

1.    What are your institution’s current FTE student numbers?

With the student numbers, could this be broken down into Home/EU and
International?

This information is exempt under section 22(1)(a) of the Act as it is
intended for future publication.  Institution-level student data, with a
detailed breakdown, will be published by HESA (Higher Education Statistics
Agency).

2.    How many students were caught for any forms of academic misconduct
over the last five years, broken down year-by-year? If it is possible to
specify the offences committed, please do so.

Please see the pdfs attached for statistics relating to unfair practice
investigations (the 2011/12 table also contains the 2010/11 figures) and
please also note the following:

The University completed a major revision of its Regulation during 2014,
with the new Regulation on Unacceptable Academic Practice being introduced
at the beginning of the 2014/15 session. The definition of plagiarism and
other breaches of the regulation were altered, so that a comparison of
2014/15 figures with those of preceding sessions may be of limited
significance. Previously, the term ‘unfair practice’ reflected the pursuit
of an intentional deception, whereas ‘bad practice’ more reflected poor
academic skills. The University’s current definition of Unacceptable
Academic Practice (which does not include an assessment of ‘intent’) can
be found here:
[1]http://www.aber.ac.uk/en/academic-qualit...).
Prior to 2014/15, cases were investigated under the Academic Regulation on
Unfair Practice.

3.    Which punishments were given to these students?

a.    Until the end of the 2013/14 session, the following penalties would
have been applied in cases which were investigated by Departments. All
penalties were subject to approval by Faculty Deans/AQRO. For students in
Part One, a module mark of zero with opportunity to resit for full marks.
For Part Two / PGT students, a mark of zero for the assessment, with no
opportunity to resit if the module was failed as a result. Variation to
these penalties would only have applied in cases of repeated UP or special
circumstances.

b.    In cases brought before the University Committee of Inquiry (all
examination cases and some coursework cases, mostly for larger
assignments), the committee would apply penalties according to the
Regulation; the cancellation of marks in full or in part, with or without
an opportunity to resit. In most cases the mark for the assignment
(coursework or examination) would be reduced to zero, with either an
opportunity to resit for a capped mark, or no opportunity to resit.
Typically the opportunity to resit would be afforded to students found
guilty of unfair practice in examinations where there had been limited or
no benefit to student from the offence, in other examination and
coursework cases the committee did not allow the opportunity to resit.
Finally, in exceptional cases the committee did impose more severe
penalties which were wider in scope than the module in question, including
the exclusion of candidates from all examinations of the University.

c.     A new points-based penalty system (applied to University and
Institute panels) was introduced at the beginning of 2014/15

4.    Does your institution use Turnitin for assessment? If so, do all
academic departments use it?

Not all departments use it for all assessments but all of them use it to
some extent.

Yours sincerely,

Julie Archer
