I sent a FOI to Middlesbrough PCT regarding abuse towards disabled people in the Middlesbrough area from the period 2009-2011. In the reply to my FOI the PCT said they did not hold that information and advised me to contact the council.

1. How many cases of abuse agaisnt disabled people have their been in Middlesbrough in the last three years.

2. Has there been a noticable increase in the last two years.

3. How do the statistics compare with national statistics?

4. What has been the percentage of funding cuts to services for disabled people.

I am writing to confirm that Middlesbrough Council has now completed its
search for the information you requested on 7 March 2012.

In your request you asked for the following information:

how many cases of abuse against disabled people have there been in
Middlesbrough in the last 3 years.

Response:  Examination of Adult Protection Alerts recorded on the Adult
Social Care Management Information System showed the following number of
individual alerts, which involved alleged cases of abuse against disabled
people;

2008/9
Physical Disabilities = 22
Learning Disabilities = 12

2009/10
Physical Disabilities = 72
Learning Disabilities = 38

2010/11
Physical Disabilities = 98
Learning Disabilities = 52

Middlesbrough Council also maintains a record of reported hate crimes. A
disability hate crime is defined as:

"Any incident, which is perceived to be based upon prejudice towards or
hatred of the victim because of their disability or so perceived by the
victim or any other person”.

In 2009 there were 0 reports of disability hate crime.

In 2010 there were 8 reported disability hate crimes out of a total of 310
hate incidents.

In 2011 there were 13 reported disability hate crimes.

Has there been a notable increase in the last 2 years?

Response: Yes

How do the statistics compare with national statistics.

Response:  The Council does not benchmarking against national statistics.
Comparative data is available in the recently published “Abuse of
Vulnerable Adults in 2010-11 Experimental Data Report” (attached below)
produced by the NHS Information Centre.

Statistics are comparable with the other Local Authorities in the Teeswide
area.

What has been the percentage of funding cuts to services for disabled
people.
