Dear Ms Dennant

Freedom of Information Request ENQ-328550-Z9M7L2

I refer to your request for information dated 24 April 2019.

You asked for:

 1. The amount of firefighters employed in 2016-2018

Our response:

Our average staff numbers are:

During year 2016/17            262.50 WDS             454 RDS

During year 2017/18            267.50 WDS             461 RDS

During year 2018/19            272.50 WDS             459.50 RDS

Please note that:

WDS = Wholetime Duty System

RDS = Retained Duty System

 2. The amount of staff off work due to mental health in each year of
2016-2018

Our response:

WDS Absence related to Mental Health was:

2016/17 = 194 duty days

2017/18 = 322 duty days

2018/19 = 847.50 duty days

RDS Absence related to Mental Health was:

2016/17 = 684 calendar days

2017/18 = 443 calendar days

2018/19 = 937 calendar days

We changed our occupational health provider in August 2017, which has
resulted in us being able to offer all staff a 24/7 free and confidential
support line, providing access to counsellors and other services such as
health and wellbeing advice and legal and financial information and
signposting. In the last year in particular, we have been doing a lot of
work to raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.
We have re-launched our Wellbeing Group, which is made up of
representatives from across the Service, undertaken a wellbeing
self-assessment and developed a wellbeing action plan, which has been
approved by MIND. This action plan has enabled us to sign the Blue Light
Time to Change Pledge, and we combined the signing event with a wellbeing
roadshow on World Mental Health Day in October 2018. Since signing the
Pledge we have started a 2 year programme to complete a Wellbeing Survey
with every team in Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service and are in the process
of recruiting 80 Wellbeing Champions. We also held events such as 'Tea and
Talk' to promote and support Mental Health Awareness Week in May 2019. We
believe that talking about mental health in the workplace means people
will feel more able to accept that they need help, which may result in
people taking more time off. We also have a few long term ill health
cases, which increases the figures significantly.

 3. The amount of staff off work due to MsK injury in each year of
2016-2018

Our response:

WDS Absence related to Musculoskeletal was:

2016/17 = 1278.50 duty days

2017/18 = 1207 duty days

2018/19 = 1226 duty days

RDS Absence related to Musculoskeletal was:

2016/17 =  3527 calendar days

2017/18 =  2469 calendar days

2018/19 =  2592 calendar days

 4. The average length of sickness period for the previous mentioned
years.

Our response:

For WDS staff the average absence length per person was:

2016/17 = 7.52 days

2017/18 = 7.58 days

2018/19 = 9.67 days

For RDS staff the average absence length per person was:

2016/17 = 12.12 days

2017/18 = 9.44 days

2018/19 = 10.38 days

 5. The uptake of physio therapy/rehabilitation by staff in 2016-2018

Our response:

2016/17 = 26 (recorded in total, this includes operational and
non-operational staff)

2017/18 = 43 (recorded in total, this includes operational and
non-operational staff)

2018/19 = 72 (recorded in total, this includes operational and
non-operational staff)

 6. The average use of fitness facilities provided across station sites
for 2016-2018

We do not provide fitness facilities on our stations.
