Dear Mr Smith

You contacted North Hertfordshire College (NHC) via the whatdotheyknow.com
website on Sunday 29 January 2017, asking three questions under the
provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (“the Act”):

1) The number of teaching staff that left the ICT and Computing Team
during the 2015-2016 academic year, and the reasoning for their leaving
(if available).

2) Please provide the number of students who failed/did not choose to
progress onto the next year of their course in the ICT and Computing
Department during the 2015-2016 academic year. If possible, please provide
information where these students are now.

3) The number of students that were studying under the ICT and Computing
department during the 2015-2016 academic year.

Our responses follow:

Question 1a: The number of teaching staff that left the ICT and Computing
Team during the 2015-2016 academic year

Response:  Six teaching staff left the ICT and Computing Team during the
2015/16 academic year.

Question 1b: the reasoning for their leaving (if available).

Response: In considering this response, I have had regard to the risk of
disclosing personal data (a potential breach of the fair processing
principle of the Data Protection Act).  This is covered by the provisions
of s40 of the Act.  Information is still personal data, even if it does
not refer to individuals by name, if it relates to a living individual,
and that individual is or could be identifiable.

Although this portion of the request does not ask for individual names to
be given, in view of the small number of staff leaving during the year in
question, disclosure of reasons for leaving in each case, if any were held
by NHC, could enable individuals to be identified.  As a result, I have
considered whether any such disclosure would breach the first data
protection principle and have concluded that it would.   Under s40 (5) (b)
(i) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, NHC neither confirms nor
denies that it holds reasons for leaving in relation to the six departures
that took place in 2015/16

Question 2a: Please provide the number of students who failed/did not
choose to progress onto the next year of their course in the ICT and
Computing Department during the 2015-2016 academic year.

Response: The Department’s achievement rate in 2015/16 was 87%.  That is,
23 of the 181 students who began the year did not complete their
programmes during this academic year.

Question 2b: If possible, please provide information where these students
are now.

Response: As indicated above 23 of 181 students did not complete their
programmes for a range of personal, domestic or work-related reasons.

Of the remaining 158 who completed their programmes:

·         81 progressed internally to other courses.

·         69 left the college and progressed into employment, HE, other
colleges, apprenticeships, or moved out of the area.

·         8 destinations were unknown.

Question 3: The number of students that were studying under the ICT and
Computing department during the 2015-2016 academic year.

Response: This department began the 2015/16 academic year with 181
students, of whom 158 completed.

If you are unhappy with this response, or you wish to complain about any
aspect of the handling of your request, then you should contact me in the
first instance. If informal resolution is not possible and you are still
dissatisfied, then you may apply for an independent internal review by
contacting Paul Harte, Group Finance Director, North Hertfordshire College
([1][email address]).

If you remain unhappy following an internal review, you may take your
complaint to the Information Commissioner under the provisions of Section
50 of the Freedom of Information Act. Further details of the role and
powers of the Information Commissioner can be found on the Commissioners
website ([2]http://www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk).

Yours sincerely
