Dear Mr Johnson,

I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request regarding
Staff at Sheffield Hallam University with Average Earnings Less Than
£74.35 Per Week at Sheffield Hallam University. Please see the information
below in response to your request.

o Please provide the exact number of your employees and workers on
zero-hours and casual contracts whose average earnings from the
University have been less than £74.35 per week  in the first semester
of the 2020-2021 academic year.
o Please provide a breakdown of the above by type of staff, e.g.
academic, administrative, IT, disability support workers, security,
estates, catering, library, other.

o Staff on zero-hours contracts are permanent employees who work
variable hours. They are issued with a 'zero-hours' contract at the
start of their employment.
o Casual workers are employed ‘occasionally’ with no continuing
contract. There is no agreement as to whether or when any work is to
be offered and the worker is not obliged to accept any work offered.
All casual workers receive a written copy of terms and conditions
before they start work.
o Where a job role does not match the categories you have specified we
have included them in ‘other’. Currently ‘other’ zero-hours job roles
may include sports coaches, group fitness instructors. The majority of
casual workers listed as ‘other’ are student ambassadors from our
cohort of more than 30,000 students. Student Ambassadors help support
events such as open days during the year. Other casual workers may
include exam invigilators, nursery assistants, fitness instructors
etc.
o The information provided is the number of staff employed as at 11^th
January 2021 and is provided on head count basis i.e. an individual
with more than one contract will only be counted once, not per
contract.
o Staff recruited after 12^th December 2020 are not included
o Average weekly earnings are based on the total amount paid in monthly
payrolls between August to December 2020 (inclusive) and the number of
days worked during that semester.
o Under Section 40 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 information
requested is exempt from disclosure if it constitutes personal data.
The University believes that, in combination with other information
that may be publicly available, it would be possible to relate some of
the information requested to identifiable individuals, and thereby
make public the personal data of those individuals. As such we have
provided the information requested broken down by academic and
non-academic staff but have not provided any further breakdown.
