Dear M Deutsch

TfL ref: FOI-0577-1112

Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 3
August 2011 asking for the specification for bus destination blinds and
guidelines for placement of operators' branding on the exterior of buses.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 and TfL's information access policy. I can confirm
that TfL does hold the information you require. You asked for:

1. The specification for the bus destination blinds, eg font size, colour,
destinations which can be displayed.

Route and Destination Displays

These are power operated front, side and rear displays with a route
selection unit in the driver's cab which simultaneously control the front,
side and rear displays.

It is the operator's responsibility and essential that all displays are
correctly positioned and co-ordinated whilst a bus is in service,
regardless of the equipment type used. A suitable method for the driver to
identify from the cab seat that the front display is correctly positioned
must be provided.

. All displays must be in Transport for London's Classic Johnston
font.

. All displays must be in Day-Glo yellow font on black background
including out of service or any other passenger information.

. All displays to be suitably and fully back illuminated by tube
or LED type lighting system, positioned at horizontal centreline of each
blind, providing an even distribution of illumination across the full
blind area.

. No light illumination gaps should be visible around any point on
the displays from the exterior view of the bus.

. No logos, signs or abbreviations are permitted on the display.
The approved ultimate and intermediate display wording will be provided
against each contract award.

. Where double letters or numbers occur on any display, additional
separation space is to be provided to improve identification.

. Blind jockey rollers or other devices must be utilised when
necessary to keep blinds taught and as close as possible to the glazing
line.

. All displays to have exterior anti vandal impact and anti
reflection overlay.

Front Route displays are to have the ultimate destination with a single
track number in a side by side arrangement with the independent single
track number to the near side.

. Front visual displays are to be no smaller than that shown in
the attached document.

. Ultimate destination to be the maximum height size available
with a percentage deformation in font size height, where necessary, to
accommodate long destination points.

. Ultimate destination sight size to be of not less than 1160mm
width and 330mm height.

. Route number to utilise full depth available from display
height, sight size of not less than 450mm width and 330mm height.

. Front destination identification to be viewable from the
driver's cab.

. Blind destination to display ultimate destination only, no
intermediates, logos, qualifiers, curtailment points or any other
information that is not part of the approved contract award wording.

The near side route display is to have ultimate destinations with single
track number in a side by side arrangement with the route number to the
forward most point of display.

. Equipment may be a combined single track or split number but
either must achieve the dimensions shown in [1]attached document.

. Ultimate destination and route number to utilise full first
window bay width.

. Side visual display to be no smaller than shown in Attachment
13.

. Ultimate destination sight size of not less than 687mm width and
210mm height.

. Route number to utilise full depth available from display
height, sight size of not less than 270mm width and 210mm height.

. Character centreline height not less than 1200mm and not more
than 2500mm from ground at bus ride height.

The rear route display is to have number identical or no smaller than the
independent front route number. All are shown in the attached document for
double and single deck buses. Please note electronic or screen displays
of any description are not permitted.

2. The guidelines for placement of operators' branding on the exterior of
the bus, and the London Buses roundel, etc.

All corporate logos and their positioning should be agreed with London
Buses. General guidance for buses that will be tendered post tranche 365
[October 2011] recommends that corporate logos be positioned above the
front entrance door on the nearside and above the driver's cab on the
offside. The London Bus roundels which are now being applied to new and
refurbished buses are to be positioned between the two wheel arches on the
offside and nearside of the bus, and will not be applied to the front and
rear of any bus.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable
to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached
information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
