Dear Mr/Ms Ahmad

I am writing further to your request for information regarding donations and research grants. A search of our electronic and paper records has been completed and I can confirm that the information requested is held in part by the University.

As requested, the answers to your questions relate to all sources of funding either by donation or research grants from nationals or organisations based in Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Syria, Turkey Israel, Palestine and Yemen for the time period 12 September 2001 to 31 January 2015.

1) What is the total of donations made by nationals of the above list of countries?

Although the University holds a central database about donations received, the 'nationality field' on this database is not a mandatory field and only 31% of the data concerning country of origin is recorded. The total is therefore information not held.

2) What is the total of donations made by non-governmental organisations?
3) What is the total of donations made by governmental organisations?

None of the organisations on our database who are based in the countries listed have donated.

4) What is the total donation made to courses (postgraduate, graduate and undergraduate) with significant Oriental Studies/Islamic (Arabic) Studies/Jewish (Hebrew) Studies elements

This information is not held (please see answers to questions 1), 2) and 3) above). In addition, we would need further clarification regarding the specific courses you are referring to in order to answer any questions in relation to this.

5) What is the total of funds received for conducting research and (where possible) for what subject area, Department, School etc?
6) How many research and teaching positions are funded, in part or solely by respective governmental, non-governmental or nationals of the above list? What is the breakdown in terms of department, subject area, school etc?

To provide the information requested would involve accessing and extracting this data from in excess of 600 individual records which we estimate would be over the limit for a Freedom of Information request. The Act sets a maximum cost of £450 for public authorities responding to requests for information. This represents the estimated cost of one person working for 3.5 days in determining whether the information is held, locating it, and retrieving it. Under Section 12(1) of the Act the University is not obliged to comply with a request that would exceed the appropriate limit and we will not be processing your request further.

7) How many offers of donation have been rejected?

We do not hold records about offers of donations that have been rejected.

If you are unhappy with the way in which your request has been handled and wish to request a review of our response or to make a complaint, please see the attached information sheet and form.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any enquiries regarding this email.

Yours sincerely,
Karen Page
