Soft Items Consumables out of date/damaged and their disposal

Roy Davis made this Freedom of Information request to East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was partially successful.

Dear East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust,

Please could you provide me with an audited list of soft item consumables (not fluids and drugs) from Emergency Vehicles that have been removed from service because they have either been damaged and cant be used or have expired.

What is the policy about removing the items from frontline service ie is there a minimum time limit eg 6 months before expiry that they are continued to be utalised.

And what method is used for disposal of these expired items- ie are they supplied to charities, training, landfill etc

Yours faithfully,

Roy Davis

7 March 2017

Dear Mr Davis

We are writing further to your e-mail dated 20 February 2017 requesting
information about out of date or damaged soft item consumables and their
disposal.

The questions you raised along with their answers can be found below:

·         Please could you provide me with an audited list of soft item
consumables (not fluids and drugs) from Emergency Vehicles that have been
removed from service because they have either been damaged and can’t be
used or have expired.  In order so we can provide you with the information
on the scale you have requested, we would need to undertake a manual trawl
of several thousand return forms to ascertain if they fitted within the
scope of your request.  We guesstimate that to undertake this work would
take roughly 100 hours, meaning that in order for us to obtain the answers
to this question, it would take us beyond the time limit (18 hours) as set
out in Section 12 of the Freedom of Information Act (2000).  For this
reason, we are unable to provide you with the information requested.

·         What is the policy about removing the items from frontline
service i.e. is there a minimum time limit e.g. 6 months before expiry
that they are continued to be utilised.  The official EMAS policy on the
removal of items can be found in Sections 11.1.3, 11.1.4 and 18 of the
attached Infection Prevention and Control Operational Procedures.

·         And what method is used for disposal of these expired items –
i.e. are they supplied to charities, training, landfill etc.  Any items
returned to supplies due to them being either expired, damaged or no
longer fit for purpose are itemised via a paper form, then if applicable
written off via our Financial Service Team.  Depending what the item is,
they either go to charities or are used for training within our education
centres.

Yours Sincerely

Matthew Williams
