Social media posts/accounts

We're waiting for Jenna Corderoy to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear Kingston University,

In December, the Daily Express found that “UK universities admitted to “monitoring” or “listening to” their student’s social media accounts”. Please see here: https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/153557...

In light of this, I would like to request the following information:

(1) Please indicate whether the university is currently monitoring, or has previously monitored, students and staff’s social media posts/accounts.

(2) If the university is currently monitoring, or has previously monitored, students and staff’s social media posts/accounts, could you please provide reasons as to why this is the case. Please also provide copies of policies or guidelines in relation to the monitoring of students and staff’ social media posts.

(3) If the university is currently monitoring, or has previously monitored, students and staff’s social media posts/accounts, could you please indicate whether this was in regards to (i) environmental protests (ii) rent strikes (iii) other protests or strike action.

(4) If the university is currently monitoring, or has previously monitored, students and staff’s social media posts/accounts, could you please state whether any specific software is used.

(5) If the university is currently monitoring, or has previously monitored, students and staff’s social media posts/accounts, could you please indicate whether this is carried out internally or that this function is outsourced. If it is outsourced, please provide details.

I would like to receive this information in an electronic format. If you feel that a substantive response to this request is not possible within a reasonable time frame, I would be grateful if you could contact me and provide assistance as to how I can refine the request. If you need any clarification, please contact me. I look forward to receiving a response in 20 working days. Many thanks.

Yours faithfully,

Jenna Corderoy

Dear Jenna,

Further to your recent request for information, the University’s response
follows.

The University does not routinely monitor either staff or student social
media accounts. It only reviews such content as part of standard social
media listening processes if the University is tagged in to posts made by
the account holder or should content be brought to the University’s
attention by another party.

This completes the University’s response to your information request. If
you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your
request and wish to make a complaint or request an internal review of our
decision please contact:

Director of DPO, email : [1][email address] or by post:  Kingston
University, Corporate Governance Unit, Freedom of Information Requests,
Holmwood House, Grove Crescent, KT1 2EE. Please note that we are unable to
receive post to this address, whilst staff are working away from campus as
a result of the Covid-19 situation.

In the event that you are not content with the outcome of your complaint
you may then apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a
decision. Generally, the Information Commissioner cannot make a decision
unless you have exhausted the complaints procedure provided by Kingston
University. The Information Commissioner can be contacted at:

The Information Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane,
Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF.

I hope that you now have the information you require.

Kind regards,

Lyn
