Social media posts/accounts
Dear Glasgow Caledonian University,
In December, the Daily Express found that “UK universities admitted to “monitoring” or “listening to” their student’s social media accounts”. Please see here: https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/153557...
In light of this, I would like to request the following information:
(1) Please indicate whether the university is currently monitoring, or has previously monitored, students and staff’s social media posts/accounts.
(2) If the university is currently monitoring, or has previously monitored, students and staff’s social media posts/accounts, could you please provide reasons as to why this is the case. Please also provide copies of policies or guidelines in relation to the monitoring of students and staff’ social media posts.
(3) If the university is currently monitoring, or has previously monitored, students and staff’s social media posts/accounts, could you please indicate whether this was in regards to (i) environmental protests (ii) rent strikes (iii) other protests or strike action.
(4) If the university is currently monitoring, or has previously monitored, students and staff’s social media posts/accounts, could you please state whether any specific software is used.
(5) If the university is currently monitoring, or has previously monitored, students and staff’s social media posts/accounts, could you please indicate whether this is carried out internally or that this function is outsourced. If it is outsourced, please provide details.
I would like to receive this information in an electronic format. If you feel that a substantive response to this request is not possible within a reasonable time frame, I would be grateful if you could contact me and provide assistance as to how I can refine the request. If you need any clarification, please contact me. I look forward to receiving a response in 20 working days. Many thanks.
Yours faithfully,
Jenna Corderoy

Dear Jenna Corderoy
I refer to your request for information below with response included.
(1) Please indicate whether the university is currently monitoring, or has
previously monitored, students and staff’s social media posts/accounts.
The University does not undertake routine monitoring of student or staff
social media. However, there may be exceptional occasions where a student
or staff member’s public profile on social media is reviewed if it is
relevant to a complaint or concern that has been raised against them,
especially if the complaint or concern relates to their conduct on social
media.
(2) If the university is currently monitoring, or has previously
monitored, students and staff’s social media posts/accounts, could you
please provide reasons as to why this is the case. Please also provide
copies of policies or guidelines in relation to the monitoring of students
and staff’ social media posts.
Please see response to Q1 above. There is no specific policy in relation
to monitoring of social media, however there are several other policies
relating to student and staff conduct that would be relevant for
inappropriate conduct on social media including:
[1]Code of Student Conduct
[2]Dignity at Work and Study Policy
[3]Preventing and Responding to Gender Based Violence
[4]Staff Conduct and Capability Policy
[5]Fitness to Practice Policy
(3) If the university is currently monitoring, or has previously
monitored, students and staff’s social media posts/accounts, could you
please indicate whether this was in regards to (i) environmental protests
(ii) rent strikes (iii) other protests or strike action.
None
(4) If the university is currently monitoring, or has previously
monitored, students and staff’s social media posts/accounts, could you
please state whether any specific software is used.
No specialist software is used to monitor students and staff’s social
media posts/accounts.
(5) If the university is currently monitoring, or has previously
monitored, students and staff’s social media posts/accounts, could you
please indicate whether this is carried out internally or that this
function is outsourced. If it is outsourced, please provide details.
Any review of social media is undertaken internally.
Please find attached a review notice setting out the steps you may take if
you are not satisfied with the response provided to your request. If there
are any questions in relation to this request, please contact the
University at [6][email address]
Yours Sincerely,
Lynsey Green
