Sir Michael Wilshaws diary and hours spent in early years classroom

Paul Lythgoe made this Freedom of Information request to Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear Office for Standards in Education,

I wish to make a Freedom of Information request for Sir Michael Wilshaws diary for the past year including all visits to education establishments to be published.

In addition I wish to know in the last year how many hours has Sir Michael Wilshaw been in an Early Years Classroom during the course of his work. How many Early Years practitioners has Sir Michael met in the past year to formally discuss Early Years educational practice. By practitioner I mean someone who is currently teaching in an Early Years Class.

Yours faithfully,

Paul Lythgoe

InformationRequest, Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills

Dear Mr Lythgoe,

Thank you for your request for information. Further to our acknowledgement letter of 24 March 2014, we have subsequently established that we require clarification of the scope of your request before we are able to proceed with it.

We ask that you clarify the following points:

You have requested Sir Michael Wilshaw's diary "for the past year including all visits to education establishments"; by 'education establishments', do you mean schools and further education and skills provisions, or do you have a different scope in mind? If so, which types of provision would you like us to consider?

In the second part of your request you have made reference to "Early Years Classrooms" and "Early Years educational practice"; does this part of your request relate to all Early Years settings (i.e childcare on the Early Years register and early years provision within schools), or specifically early years classes as part of a school's provision?

Once we have received this clarification from you we will proceed with your request accordingly. If you have any questions about this email and our approach in the meantime, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Yours sincerely,

Dear InformationRequest,

In the first part by education establishments I just mean schools. In the second part I mean early years provision within schools.

Yours sincerely,

Paul Lythgoe

InformationRequest, Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills

Dear Mr Lythgoe,

Thank you for clarifying those aspects of your request for us.

In order to ensure that we are focussing our response to you on the
information you actually want, and in keeping with our duty to provide
advice and assistance to individuals requesting information, please could
you also confirm whether you are requesting records of all appointments
from Sir Michael's Wilshaw's diary, or only those records of visits to
schools and meetings with early years practitioners in schools?

We ask because it is possible that if your request extends to the whole
diary, the cost of compiling a complete record for the period in question
may exceed the limit beyond which we are not required to consider a
request. Were this to be the case, our position would be to refuse to
provide any of the information you have requested as to do so would exceed
the cost limit. If therefore, your interest lies in the specified visits
rather than the entire diary, clarification of this point would enable us
to focus our searches accordingly.

I hope this email is of assistance to you. If you have any questions,
please don’t hesitate to contact us again.

Yours sincerely,

Dear InformationRequest,

I am requesting all diary entries relating to meetings within schools with early years practitioners, and all meetings relating to early years practice within schools.

In relation to your comments regards to cost, I would have thought it would be cheaper to follow a total transparency approach and publish a full unredacted diary.

Yours sincerely,

Paul Lythgoe

I apologise that I did not acknowledge receipt of your email at the time. I can confirm that the deadline for your clarified request is 13 May 2014, however if we can respond sooner we will of course do so.
