Sinclair method as approved treatment through Brent Drug and Alcohol service

The request was successful.

Dear Brent Borough Council,

1. In light of its 80% success rate in treating alcohol use disorder, in comparison to the AA/rehab model where the success rate is 15%, is the Sinclair method an approved treatment by the LB of Brent funded drug and alcohol service?

2. If not, why not?

3. If not, are there plans for it to be introduced as an approved treatment?

Yours faithfully,

Jonathan Boyle

Public Health Response: New Beginnings (the drug and alcohol provider for
Brent) does not specifically recognise the Sinclair Model, and its staff
are not trained about how the model is delivered, the service does
regularly prescribe Naltrexone, the primary medication used for alcohol
craving management within the Sinclair Model. Anecdotally, Naltrexone has
had a very positive impact on our service user’s recovery over the last 12
months.

 2. If not, why not?

Public Health Response:  Services and clinical interventions in Brent are
delivered in line with the National Institute for Clinical Excellence
(NICE) Guidelines relating to identifying, assessing and
managing alcohol-use disorders (harmful drinking and alcohol dependence)
and Drug misuse and dependence: UK guidelines on clinical management.
Recommended citation: Clinical Guidelines on Drug Misuse and Dependence
Update 2017.

3. If not, are there plans for it to be introduced as an approved
treatment?

Public Health Response: If included in the above response to question 2
then this could be considered, but this would be is a clinical issue for
the specialist doctors to decide subject to NHS clinical governance rather
than Brent Council Public Health.
