Shipwrecks
Dear Maritime and Coastguard Agency,
Please can you give full details of what all known shipwrecks known by your agency within British territorial waters.
Please can you also give all details of what someone would have to do when they have identified a shipwreck.
Please could I also have all information about what your agency does when someone has access a ship wreck without prior agreement from appropriate government agencies.
Yours faithfully,
Jonathan Mantle
Dear Mr Mantle,
Thank you for your enquiry regarding information on shipwrecks held by the
Maritime and Coastguard Agency. This has been given tracking number
F0001493.
You have requested full details of all known shipwrecks known by the MCA
within British territorial waters. Would it be possible to narrow down any
specific information that you are hoping to find? For example, are there
particular wrecks that you are interested in or perhaps a particular area
of the coast?
You have also asked what action the MCA takes when shipwrecks are accessed
without prior agreement from appropriate government agencies. Is there a
particular scenario that you are interested in? For the most part,
accessing (ie diving on) shipwrecks inside of UK territorial waters does
not require prior agreement from government agencies although there are
some circumstances where specific permissions or licences will be required
in advance of any activity taking place. Please let me know if there is a
particular circumstance that you are interested in.
Please find my contact details below and I look forward to hearing from
you.
Kind regards,
Alison Kentuck

Dear Alison Kentuck,
Thanks very much for your email!
Could I add an addition to me request before I clarify. Do you have records of all wrecks in British Teritorial waters?
With reguards to a specific time period, please could you give me detials of ships wrecked from 1900 until 2000, please.
To clarify my point on the statement:
>Please could I also have all information about what your agency
> does when someone has access a ship wreck without prior agreement
> from appropriate government agencies.
I will clarify my points here as I thik I needed to have more detials (A thousand appologies!)
1) When a wreck is identified what is that process for yourselves?
2) Which law protects wrecks once identified by your agency from privateers who would take from wrecks for illegal gain?
3) What circumstances would threre be needed for specific permissions or licences for accsessing of wrecks?
More than anything I was interested in people trying to take good from a ship or such without authorisation.
Thanks for your email!
Yours sincerely
Jonathan
