Shingles Deaths in England and Wales 2007-2017

We're waiting for Verity Roscorla to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear Office for National Statistics,
Please could you provide records of deaths in England and Wales, where Shingles was cited as the primary cause, with no other factors involved. I am particularly interested in those from Cornwall, but England and Wales will suffice if you have that information, thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Verity Roscorla

They put a typo in the webpage address. The actual webpage address that appears to contain their response seems to be https://www.ons.gov.uk/aboutus/transpare...

Good Morning Verity

I have checked the link and there does not appear to be a problem.

Nevertheless, the response to your FOI Request is as follows;

You have made a Freedom of Information Request asking for ‘records of deaths in England and Wales, where Shingles was cited as the primary cause, with no other factors involved.'

We code the underlying cause of death using the International Classification of Diseases, version 10 (ICD-10). Deaths with an underlying cause of shingles are assigned the ICD-10 code B02.9 (Zoster without complication), which is categorised under B02 (Zoster [Herpes Zoster]).

Figures for deaths by cause and geography are available for 2013 to 2015 from our explorable dataset: https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/query/select/...

To protect the confidentiality of individuals, small counts for areas below region level are rounded; counts of 0, 1, and 2 are rounded to 0, while counts of 3, 4, and 5 are rounded to 5.

2016 data will be added to our explorable dataset in October 2017.

Prior to 2013 deaths by cause for England and Wales are available in table 5 of our Deaths registered in England and Wales (Series DR) publication: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationa...

Other special extracts and tabulations of deaths data for England and Wales are available (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreement of costs, where appropriate). If you would like any further information, you can contact the team directly at: [email address]

Kind regards
