Dear Sharon Stratford

We write in response to your freedom of information request to the London
School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), which we received on 1
March 2024. We wrote to you on 15th March 2024 to inform you that due to
other matters we would respond to your request by 22 April 2024. Apologies
for a delayed response.

Your request

Please could you share the advice given by the AWERB to the establishment
licence holder in the last 3 years specifically regarding replacements and
alternative methods to animal testing. " We note that the university is
required by law ASPA Schedule 3, Part 2, paragraph 6 (4) to keep records
of any advice given by the AWERB.

Our response

We have handled your request in line with the Freedom of Information Act
2000, and we can confirm that we hold the information you have requested.
Please see our response below.

• The school’s PPL for Breeding Genetically Altered mice will not be
replaced when it expires.
• Consider cryopreservation as a method to preserve the unique mouse
strains.
• The NC3Rs regional manager, together with animal welfare staff, have
conducted institutional information campaigns on the promotion of the
NC3Rs research hub resource: “Research culture and the 3Rs”, the RSPCA
road map resource sheets, the RSPCA event on severe suffering, the
recent MRC policy and NC3Rs presentations on using both sexes, the
NC3Rs resources for experimental design, the NC3Rs new and updated
online mouse aggression resource and new e-learning modules on pain
and distress assessment.
• Recent BSF events have included refinements in mouse handling methods
and replacement topics usch as ‘Malaria transmission in the lab: no
mice needed”.
