Dear Fiona Brierley,

Many thanks for responding to this request, and for getting back to me so quickly. Thank you also for the additional information you provided with regards to moderation, which is also very helpful.

I fear that my wording in questions 1 and 4 was perhaps not clear enough - I wasn't asking how many people in each category marked papers (although this is still useful to know), I was asking how many papers were marked by people in each category. This was to get a rough idea of the overall percentage of papers being marked by teachers, teaching support staff etc. However, as you have stated that 5 people in the 'other' category also marked papers, it would be very useful if you could also specify which group these markers were drawn from? Questions 1 and 4 did ask for this information - but perhaps could have been clearer in this respect also.

Thank you so much in anticipation, and I look forward to hearing from you again at your earliest convenience -

Yours sincerely,

H. Coley

I do not know how many were marked by individuals.
Of the 5 ‘others’ they are retired ex-teachers I believe.

All markers at SHSG are experienced and receive training each year. The lead marker also goes to central training and ensures that everyone is applying the mark schemes correctly.

In the interests of openness. You asked about papers marked in school. The ‘continuous writing’ English papers are marked centrally. We send 4 qualified English teachers to mark.

Dear F. Brierley,

Thank you very much for providing me with this additional information in the interests of openness - it is very much appreciated, and very helpful to know. However, am I right in thinking that the marking of the 'continuous writing' papers has not always been carried out centrally - or, if it has always been carried out centrally, not all test centres have always participated in this practice? To avoid making any unnecessary FOI requests in the future, it would be really useful to know when this practice started (test/entry year) and whether it applies to all test centres/test sittings. I am aware that the 'continuous writing' element was not introduced until the 2014 test/2015 entry year. It wouldn't be fair to name individuals or schools on a public website, but I am aware that both parents and private tutors have been involved in marking 'continuous writing' papers (in some test centres - clearly not SHSG) in the past - but the additional information you have given would seem to indicate that this is not possible. Would it be better if I directed my enquiries to the CSSE? I do appreciate all schools are busy, and I really don't want to take up any more of your time unnecessarily.

Thank you again -

Yours sincerely,

H. Coley

The continuous writing paper has been marked centrally since it was introduced. SHSG has always sent qualified teachers of English to mark.
