Dear University of Reading,

I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. In order to assist you with this request, I am outlining my query as specifically as possible.
I would like to know the yearly salary of the pro vice chancellor/s and how much that has increased since 2012, year-to-year.
I would be interested in any information held by your organization regarding my request. I understand that I do not have to specify files or documents and that it is the institution’s responsibility to provide the information I require. If you need further clarification, please contact me by email.
I would like to receive the information electronically.
If my request is denied in whole or in part, I ask that you justify this by reference to specific exemptions of the Act. I will also expect you to release all non-exempt material. I reserve the right to appeal your decision to withhold any information or to charge excessive fees.
I would be grateful if you could confirm in writing/by email that you have received this request. I look forward to your response within 20 working days, as outlined by the statute.

Dear Mr Roberts,
We have completed the compilation of information in response to your
We can confirm that we do hold the information specified in your request;
“I would like to know the yearly salary of the pro vice chancellor/s and
how much that has increased since 2012, year-to-year.” However, under
section 40(2) of the FOIA we are withholding the specific yearly salary of
each Pro-Vice-Chancellor.
Section 40(2) of the FOIA allows a public authority to withhold
information under the FOIA when the information requested is personal data
relating to someone other than the requestor, and its disclosure would
breach any of the Data Protection principles. In this case we believe that
the disclosure of information in respect of potentially identifiable
individuals would not be within their reasonable expectations and as such
would be unfair and in breach of the first data protection principle which
requires personal data to be processed fairly and lawfully. Section 40 (2)
is an absolute exemption and not subject to a public interest test.
We have however provided you with a web-link below to the University
Accounts information, under section 7 (staff costs), you will find the
information relating to salaries in an aggregated format under sub-heading
‘Remuneration of higher paid staff’. We hope this is of use to you.
We are required to include details of our complaints procedures, including
your rights to apply to the Information Commissioner.  The procedure is
