Sellafield Floor Mats going offsite to be washed

The request was partially successful.

Dear Environment Agency,

Are mats and other materials from Sellafield construction sites going offsite to be washed by MireServices in Workington?

Has the EA tested the run off/sludge from the construction floor mats ?

Where is the effluent going?

In 2019 we took photos of the mats being washed in the street with sludge and water run off going down the street and you said that " it is not good practice to wash any mats in the street and allow the waste water to discharge to surface water drains. Hence, we have warned Mire Services that discharge of effluent to surface water without a permit is an offence under the Environmental Permitting Regulations.”

Have the EA issued MireServices with a permit for discharge of effluent to surface water or drains?

If MireServices are still washing the mats with effluent going to drains - where are they washing them? (note MireServices is also a catering company supplying local schools)

Yours faithfully,

Marianne Birkby

Dear Marianne

Enquiry regarding Sellafield Floor Mats.

Thank you for your enquiry received on 19 April 2022.

We respond under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and Environment
Information Regulations 2004.

Thank you for your enquiry regarding the industrial mats being washed in
Workington, we have followed this up with Sellafield Ltd.   The only mats
which Mire Services wash, which originate from the Sellafield site, are
from construction worker cabins and are not from any of the designated
areas where there may be radioactive contamination.   Hence, we are
satisfied that, even if the mats originate from the Sellafield site, there
is no radioactive waste associated with the mat washing.  However, it is
not good practice to wash any mats in the street and allow the waste water
to discharge to surface water drains. Hence, we have warned Mire Services
that discharge of effluent to surface water without a permit is an offence
under the Environmental Permitting Regulations.

Looking at the location we believe the drains in that area are on a
combined system which would mean that, whereas the practice is not
something that we would encourage,  any washings entering the roadside
drains, would eventually be treated at the Waste Water Treatment works.
Hence we would assess the risk to the environment as being low.

Please refer to the Open Government Licence which explains ther permitted
use for this information.

Please get in touch if you have any further queries or contact us within
two months if you’d like us to review the information we have sent.

Kind regards.
