Self-proclaimed "sex abuse" expert Dr Anthony William Baker, now falsely claiming to be a "professor"

The request was successful.

C. Smith-Byrne

Dear General Medical Council,

I would like to refer to my FOI request dated 13th March 2011 to the GMC which was only partially answered. Would you please look up the following:

http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/se...

and explain in detail why the GMC is not inclined to hold criminal doctors accountable even if proven:

http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/vi...

Both requests refer to a known paedophile "child psychiatrist" who is well known in legal circles for producing "expert evidence" about children and families he has never seen (accepted by the courts operating behind closed doors and issuing gagging orders) against cash. It goes without saying that he obtains a number of his referrals from equally corrupt "colleagues" who also claim titles they do not possess (see above FOI request). To then have the audacity to publicly pin these badges of honour on his/their chest(s) without sanctioning through the body responsible for regulating doctors beggars belief.

I look forward to your response. In detail.

Yours faithfully,

C. Smith-Byrne

Dear Ms Smith-Byrne

Thank you for your email dated 10 June 2011, in which you request
information regarding criminal doctors and decisions taken by our Fitness
to Practise Panel.

In response to your request I write to inform you that our rules allow us
to deal quickly with doctors who have received a criminal conviction or
caution. In many cases, particularly where the doctor has received a
custodial sentence, the case will be referred directly to a Fitness to
Practise panel for a hearing. Certain categories of conviction cases (such
as parking offences) will be closed at a very early stage with no further
investigation or action.

Information about Fitness to Practise Panels can be found on the following
page of our website:

[1]http://www.gmc-uk.org/concerns/hearings_...

As you can see Fitness to Practise Panellists are independently appointed,
and are not council members. Panellists hear the evidence relating to a
case and they decide what (if any) action should be taken on a doctor's
registration.

Just as a doctor can appeal a decision by a Fitness to Practise panel, the
Council of Healthcare Regulatory Excellence (CHRE) have the power to refer
a decision by a Fitness to Practise panel to the High Court (or its
equivalent elsewhere in the UK), if it considers that the decision is
unduly lenient. (I should point out the Council of Healthcare Regulatory
Excellence (CHRE) oversee the work of the GMC and the eight other health
professional regulators.)

I hope the above information is useful.

If you have any queries or concerns regarding the processing of your
request please contact Julian Graves, Information Access Manager, at the
address at the bottom of this email, or email [2][email address]

Kind regards
