ACCOUNT, Unmonitored, Department for Education

Dear Ms Bartley,

Thank you for your freedom of information request:

"Please provide an extract from the National Pupil Database to provide
details of selective secondary schools (grammar schools) to include the
following details for each school on that list:
·         URN,
·         School Name,

·         Number of children in receipt of Free School Meals (KS3 & KS4

·         Number of children who have been in receipt of Free School Meals
within the last six years (KS3 & KS4 only)"

I will be providing information for you from the school census dataset,
which feeds into the National Pupil Database.

There are two school census collections. The main school census is
administered to state-funded schools and the data is collected at
individual pupil level. Independent schools submit aggregate data to the
School Level Annual School Census (SLASC) collection in the form of total
numbers of pupils of various ages, genders etc. This means that we are not
able to identify individual pupils attending private schools and cannot
therefore answer your question about the number of children at grammar
schools who previously attended a private primary school.

We can link records from the main school census collection across academic
years, so we are able to provide information about state-funded schools
currently and previously attended by a child. To answer your question
'Number of children whose primary school is unknown' I can count pupils
currently attending grammar schools for whom we do not have a
corresponding record showing attendance at a state-funded primary school
in year 6.  However, this will only show that the pupils identified cannot
be found in the state-funded sector at that age, we do not hold any
information on why that would be so. A proportion of those pupils will
have been attending private schools but the records will also include, for
example, pupils who were living abroad at that age, pupils being
home-schooled, and pupils not enrolled at a state-funded school that year
for any other reason. Please can you confirm that you are happy to accept
the number of pupils not found in school census in a year 6 class in
answer to the question?

I think the other items requested will be straightforward to supply.

Please can you reply to the schools statistics mailbox copied into this
email. The email originates from an unmonitored account so if you reply
directly to it I will not receive your reply and will not be able to
process your request.

I look forward to receiving your reply.

Dear Department for Education,

FAO: SCHOOL STATISTICS MAILBOX, Ann Claytor, Statistician, School Census Statistics team

Dear Ann,

Thank you for the helpful reply. Yes, I can confirm that I am fine to receive information on the number of pupils not found in school census in a year 6 class in answer to my question. I understand the limitations of this data, and that we will not know where they were educated, but it is still interesting information.

I was asked to reply to an email to the school statistics team, but due to the way the WhatDoTheyKnow FOI site handles emails, I could not see the email address. I hope this can be forwarded to the right place and connected to my FOI enquiry.

Yours faithfully,

Joanne Bartley
