Secondary employment levels of staff

Mr Acres made this Freedom of Information request to Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was partially successful.

Dear Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service,

Under the Freedom of Information Act, I would like to know how many full-time firefighters (all operational crews) your Fire & Rescue Service currently employs and how many of those firefighters are registered as having second jobs outside of their main employment in your Fire & Rescue Service. Would you please include a breakdown of what roles such firefighters are carrying out as second jobs, for example, taxi driver, door supervisor, carer, paramedic and so on?

Yours faithfully,

Mr Acres

Dear Mr Acres

Further to your correspondence of 24 July 2018, which I have treated as a
Freedom of Information request, please find below the information that you
requested.

Query:

I would like to know how many full-time firefighters (all operational
crews) your Fire & Rescue Service currently employs and how many of those
firefighters are registered as having second jobs outside of their main
employment in your Fire & Rescue Service?

Would you please include a breakdown of what roles such firefighters are
carrying out as second jobs, for example, taxi driver, door supervisor,
carer, paramedic and so on?

Response:

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue currently employs 434 wholetime
Firefighters (with an additional 35 members of Control staff), 25 of which
have been recorded as holding secondary employment outside of the Service.

We are unable to provide a more detailed breakdown of the roles undertaken
in the course of secondary employment. We are applying the exemption
afforded by Section 40(2) Personal Information of the Freedom of
Information Act 2000, which provides that a request for information is
exempt if the information requested constitutes personal data about a
third party.  In particular we choose to rely upon section 40(3)(a)(i),
which provides an absolute exemption if disclosure of the personal data
would contravene any of the data protection principles as defined in the
Data Protection Act 2018.  Due to the low numbers involved, we are of the
opinion that to disclose the requested information could identify someone
and would be unfair and contrary to the first data protection principle.

If you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your
request and wish to make a complaint or request a review of the decision,
you should write to the Information Management Team, Dorset & Wiltshire
Fire and Rescue Service, Five Rivers Health and Wellbeing Centre, Hulse
Road, Salisbury, Wiltshire SP1 3NR within 40 working days of receipt of
the original decision.  Alternatively you can email
[1][DWFRS request email] .

If you are not content with the outcome of your complaint or review, you
may apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision.
Generally the ICO cannot make a decision unless you have exhausted the
complaints procedure at the Fire Authority.  The Information Commissioner
can be contacted at:
