Scottish Teachers for Permanence

Dear Scottish Government,

I am writing to make a formal request under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

I would like to request the following information regarding the Scottish Government’s rationale for the probationer year in teaching:

Any statements, documents, or communications that outline the Scottish Government's rationale for the probationer year, particularly regarding whether probationer teachers are still considered to be "in training" and "supernumerary" (i.e., additional to the standard workforce).

Any evidence or documentation showing whether the Scottish Government or local councils have discussed or made claims that probationer teachers contribute to council budget savings.

Any council budget documents that specify savings related to employing an increased number of probationer teachers.

Please provide any relevant materials covering the period from January 1, 2022 to the present.

If clarification of any part of this request is needed, or if it could be refined in a way that would make the search more effective, please let me know.

I look forward to your response within the statutory timeframe.

Yours faithfully,
James Orr
