Scoring System for Medicine Applicants

The request was successful.

Dear Imperial College London,
I am curious to know as to how specifically medicine applicants are assessed at Imperial. Is there any particular weighting/tier system in place? Such as say, BMATx%, personal statementx% etc. Also what are the outcomes for candidates who have performed fairly poorly at GCSE level (just about meeting Imperial's minimum) but obtaining A*A*A-A*A*A* at A-level, along with a strong BMAT ie. Band 1/2. Is it Maths and Science GCSEs that matter most, or are the whole set of GCSE results assessed holistically. Much thanks for any response.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Mr [name removed]

Thank you for your recent Freedom of Information request.

Please find below the College’s response to your questions.

Selection for the College's MBBS / BSc Medicine course follows a stream of activities. Candidates must satisfy the entry criteria (available on the College website: http://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/ug/cours... ) , then perform above the BMAT threshold for that year of entry. The UCAS application is shortlisted on personal & referee statements at which point candidates may be invited for interview. Selection is then finalised at interview. Templates used by the College for interviews and short-listing are attached.

The GCSE requirements are that all applicants must have the following subjects at GCSE level, at grades AAABB or above (in any order):

Biology (or Human Biology)
Chemistry
English Language
Mathematics (or Additional Mathematics or Statistics) Physics The Science double award or Science plus Additional Science may substitute all sciences at GCSE.

Applicants who obtain these grades or higher are treated equally in the selection process.
