Science Museum membership suspension

Mr Speller made this Freedom of Information request to Science Museum Group

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was partially successful.

Dear The National Museum of Science and Industry,

I'm writing to ask about the membership scheme which was offered by the Science Museum until around one year ago as I am curious as to why this was suspended and what plans are being developed to replace it.

Please could you supply any information around this, and in particular, copies of internal e-mails/meeting minutes/etc relating to the decision to stop accepting new members and the reasons for this, and if possible any internal communications discussing future replacement membership schemes, or any decisions around these, including the possibility of no longer offering membership at all for the foreseeable future.

Yours faithfully,

Mr Speller

Mr Speller,

Thank you for your Freedom of Information Act (2000) request with regards to the possibility of obtaining from the Science Museum Group information relating to the suspension of the Membership Scheme.

I have contacted the Museum's Development Team who previously operated the Membership Scheme. They have informed me that the main reason for the cancellation of this project was a financial one. In short the project was not generating a profit for the Museum and therefore had to be cancelled.

The Science Museum Group, as I am sure you are aware, is a collection of free Museums. The Science Museum does not have a regular programme of paid for exhibitions or events. As such the Museum, despite efforts to encourage new members (most notably at the adult only Lates Events), was unable to attract the necessary new volume of members needed to make the scheme viable.

I have attached a short spreadsheet of financial data supporting the financial situation of the Membership Scheme. With regards to obtaining minute notes/internal discussions unfortunately owing to the fact that the financial status of the scheme was common knowledge within the Development Team there were very little internal written communications.

Should you be unable to open the attached document then please feel free to contact me again on the following email: [email address]. Please quote which systems you are using to try and open this document (IPad, PC, Microsoft, Mac).

I should also like to take this opportunity to inform you that the Science Museum Group takes its Freedom of Information Act responsibilities very seriously. Each enquiry is investigated and researched to ensure the greatest amount of detail is released.

I trust this information is of some use to you and I wish you all the best with your research.
