Schools still using resources by Sparklebox Teaching Resources
Dear Department for Education,
Under the Freedom of Information Act, I would like to understand how many schools are using resources acquired from Sparklebox Teaching Resources, which was until recently still under the ownership of Samuel Kinge, a twice convicted sex offender (and on trial for a third) or his family. Too many schools are still nonchalant, ignorant or unaware of the issues that started in 2010 and are still relevant to this day, making the use of those resources immoral. Plus with Google Adwords etc used on the website, every visit is effectively putting money in the pocket of this person, directly or otherwise.
Yours faithfully,
Michael Duggins

Dear Mr Duggins,
Thank you for your request for information, which was received on 02 April
2020.
You requested:
“Under the Freedom of Information Act, I would like to understand how many
schools are using resources acquired from Sparklebox Teaching Resources,
which was until recently still under the ownership of Samuel Kinge, a
twice convicted sex offender (and on trial for a third) or his family.”
I have dealt with your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000
(“the Act”).
The Department for Education (DfE) does not hold the information you
requested. The DfE does not fund the Sparklebox Teacher Resources (UK) Ltd
website neither does the DfE hold information about which, or how many
schools use these resources. There are a large number of resources
available to teachers and DfE does not check, quality assure or direct
schools on their use. Schools are free to make their own choice of
resources available to them to support their teaching.
Schools and colleges are under a legislative duty to safeguard and promote
the welfare of their pupils. As part of this duty they must have regard to
statutory guidance Keeping children safe in education (KCSIE). Please see
link.

The statutory guidance sets out what school governing bodies and
proprietors must do and should do to keep their pupils safe.
If you have any queries about this letter, please contact me. Please
remember to quote the reference number above in any future communications.
If you are unhappy with the way your request has been handled, you should
make a complaint to the Department by writing to me within two calendar
months of the date of this letter. Your complaint will be considered by an
independent review panel, who review panel, who were not involved in the
original consideration of your request.
If you are not content with the outcome of your complaint to the
Department, you may then contact the Information Commissioner’s Office.
Yours sincerely,
Olubukola OGUNLEYE
