Dear Department for Education,
I understand that good schools can expand onto different sites, to create a 'satellite' of the school, if the school demonstrates that it is a genuine expansion of an existing school and not a new institution.
Can you let me know names and dates of schools a) applying to do this. b) approved to do this, in the last 7 years.
Thank you for contacting the Department for Education, you will usually
receive a reply within 15 working days.
You can find out how the department processes your personal information by

Dear Ms Bartley
Thank you for your request for information, which was received on 22 March
2019. You requested;
I understand that good schools can expand onto different sites, to create
a 'satellite' of the school, if the school demonstrates that it is a
genuine expansion of an existing school and not a new institution.
Can you let me know names and dates of schools a) applying to do this b)
approved to do this, in the last 7 years.
I have dealt with your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
I have broken the request down into 2 parts – LA maintained schools and
LA maintained schools are not required to apply to the department to
expand. This is done through local decision making arrangements. We
therefore do not hold this information.
Academy trusts are required to apply to the department when seeking to
expand a school, therefore the department holds the information you have
requested. However, the department estimates that the cost of complying
with your request would exceed the cost threshold applicable to central
Government. This is £600 and represents the estimated cost of one person
spending 3½ working days locating, retrieving and extracting the
Under section 12 of the Act the Department is therefore not obliged to
comply with your request and will not be processing it further.
However, if you were to make a new request for a narrower category of
information or limit the scope of your request, the Department may be able
to comply with your request within the cost limit, although I cannot
guarantee that this will be the case.
It may help if I outline some possible ways of narrowing your request. The
department holds data on the number of expansion applications received
from academies. However, the data is not broken down into ‘satellite’ and
‘on-site’ expansions. Therefore each application would need to be looked
at to determine whether it was relevant to this request. You may want to
consider changing the scope of your request to a narrower timeframe. We
cannot guarantee any set number of months would fall below the threshold
but the shorter the timeframe the greater the likelihood.
If you have any queries about this letter, please contact me. Please
remember to quote the reference number above in any future communications.
If you are unhappy with the way your request has been handled, you should
make a complaint to the Department by writing to me within two calendar
months of the date of this letter. Your complaint will be considered by
an independent review panel, which were not involved in the original
consideration of your request.
If you are not content with the outcome of your complaint to the
Department, you may then contact the Information Commissioner’s Office.
