School Streets Initiatives

[Name Removed] made this Freedom of Information request to Peterborough City Council as part of a batch sent to 148 authorities This request has been closed to new correspondence. Contact us if you think it should be reopened.

The request was successful.

Dear Peterborough City Council,

Please could you tell me:
a) How many School Streets there are currently in your local authority area?
b) How much has been spent on School Streets initiatives in the last three financial years?
c) How many school streets are currently in planning phase (for example, plans have been drawn up or budget has been bid for, for example, via the DfT's Emergency Active Travel Fund)?

For the avoidance of doubt, a School Street is a road outside a school with a temporary restriction on motorised traffic at school drop-off and pick-up times. The restriction applies to school traffic and through traffic. Local authorities have powers to use traffic management orders to turn a road outside a school into a pedestrian and cycle zone.

Yours faithfully,

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST – CRN2010790064

Dear Sir / Madam,

Your request for information, with reference number CRN2010790064 has
now been considered and the information requested is given below.

Information Request: Please could you tell me:

a)  How many School Streets there are currently in your local
authority area?
b)  How much has been spent on School Streets initiatives in the last
three financial years?

Our Response:

Request and Response

a)  How many School Streets there are currently in your local
authority area?

Currently we have School Streets schemes taking place outside the
following schools:

Nursery / Infants
Brewster Avenue Infant & Nursery School
Orton St John Pre-School
St Thomas More Catholic Nursery (starts 19th October)

Primary
Southfields Primary
St Michaels Church School
St Johns Church School (Orton)
Lime Academy Parnwell
St Thomas More Catholic Primary School (starts 19th October)

Secondary
St John Fisher Catholic High School (starts 19th October)

b)  How much has been spent on School Streets initiatives in the last
three financial years?

2018/19 financial year - £0 spend.

During the 2019/20 financial year only one trial scheme was
implemented at Longthorpe Primary. This was a one week trial that
took place in March (however it had to be cut short due to Covid 19).
The cost to trial this scheme (including staff, materials and
marketing) was £2000.

This financial year 20/21 so far approximately £5000 (including staff
costs, materials and marketing) has been spent to implement the
School Street schemes listed above. Funding for the schemes is
provided by the Combined Authority (CA)  (Sustainable Travel funding
allocation) and through the DfT Emergency Active Travel Fund. We are
still receiving expressions of interest from additional schools so
further spend (already secured from the Dft Emergency Active Travel
fund and the CA) will be needed for the remainder of the financial
year (estimated to be a maximum of a further £5000).

c)  How many school streets are currently in planning phase (for
example, plans have been drawn up or budget has been bid for, for
example, via the DfT's Emergency Active Travel Fund)?

A further 6 schemes are currently in the planning stage (this could
be that the schools / residents have expressed an interest, risk
assessments are being drawn up, plans are being made). It may not be
possible to run schemes at all the schools that have expressed an
interest. We are also still open to Expressions of Interest from
schools, residents and parents and hope to implement a number of
schemes in the next 12 months. Rebecca Presland (Transport planning
officer at Peterborough City Council is leading on the projects and
can be contacted - [1][email address]
