School meals providers

Department for Education did not have the information requested.

Dear Department for Education,

I would like to get information on the provision of school meals, specifically regarding statistics on the number or proportion of schools that use local authority catering providers, those that use private companies, and those that use in-house services.

Such information was previously available for 2013/14 from the school lunch take-up survey but I am unable to find figures for later dates. (https://dera.ioe.ac.uk/21825/1/RR405_-_S...)

I would also like to receive the data that must exist behind these figures, ie. lists of which local authorities (and schools if available) provide catering services themselves and which contract out to private companies.

Finally, if you have data on companies that have taken up contracts with local authorities or directly with schools. If you need to reduce this task, I would be interested in the largest providers, such as Caterlink, Chartwells and Sodexo (or others of that size).

Many thanks in advance.

Yours faithfully,

Stephen Cockburn

ACCOUNT, Unmonitored, Department for Education

Dear Mr Cockburn

Thank you for your request for information, which was received on 24
February 2019. You requested:

 1. Current statistics on the number or proportion of schools that use
local authority catering providers, those that use private companies,
and those that use in-house services.
 2. Lists of which local authorities (and schools if available) provide
catering services themselves and which contract out to private
companies (from the 2013/14 School Meals Take-Up Survey survey).
 3. Data on companies that have taken up contracts with local authorities
or directly with schools, especially interested in the largest
providers, such as Caterlink, Chartwells and Sodexo (or others of that
size).

I am dealing with your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

We do not collect or hold the data you requested in items (1) and (3).
Regarding item (2), the data we hold does not contain identifying details
about the schools that responded to the survey (neither their names nor
their Local Authorities). We could explore providing the number of schools
that reported using different models of provision (i.e. contract with a
private provider, contract with their Local Authority, or “in-house”), for
each of the nine regions of England. Would this interest you? Grateful if
you could confirm in reply to this email. Please remember to quote the
reference number above in any future communications.

If you are unhappy with the way your request has been handled, you should
make a complaint to the Department by writing to me within two calendar
months of the date of this email. Your complaint will be considered by an
independent review panel, which were not involved in the original
consideration of your request.

If you are not content with the outcome of your complaint to the
Department, you may then contact the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Yours sincerely,

Mihiri Seneviratne
