School and Pupil Statistics for England & Wales

Lisa Hayward made this Freedom of Information request to Department for Education

This request has been closed to new correspondence. Contact us if you think it should be reopened.

The request was partially successful.

Dear Department for Education,

I have a few questions that I would like answered under the freedom of information Act. The information I seek is about England and Wales as up to date as possible, preferably 2010 data.

If you could please provide:

1) Total number of primary schools of all types in England & Wales.

2) Total number of secondary schools in England & Wales

3) A detailed breakdown of the total numbers of different types of primary and secondary schools (i.e. independent, academies) and how many pupils each type has (in a table if possible, I have seen similar information sent through in response to a request 2009/0004798). So for example I would like to be able to see how many academies there are in England and UK in 2010.

4) The numbers and percentages of students per school type, then by LEA and borough that are immigrants and/or English is their second language.

5) The percentages of students from low income families per school type, then by LEA and/or Borough

Yours faithfully,

Lisa Hayward

Dear Department for Education,

Just to clarify question 5 - when I say "low income" I mean number of children entitled to free school meals if that makes things clearer.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Ms Hayward,
Thank you for your email dated 15th December 2010 regarding the following
questions:-

1) The total number of primary schools in England - please see attached a
table by local authority of all state maintained schools which have a
phase of education as Primary noted on EduBase.
This does not include any special schools or independent schools as
neither of these have a phase of education.
Please note your request also asked for information on Welsh schools, the
data we hold on EduBase is for teachers pensions purposes only, I would
kindly suggest that you contact the Welsh Assembly via the following web
link at:-
[1]http://new.wales.gov.uk/topics/statistic...

2) The total number of secondary schools again per local authority and
phase of education, please note here that I have included middle deemed
secondary schools also.

3) The third question includes data based on all school types as special
and independent schools have no phase of education I have included the age
ranges as well. This data includes the total number of pupils, number of
boys and the number of girls.
As I cannot provide data on immigrants or English as a second language I
have also included the numbers of Free School Meals and percentages per
school .

I hope this information is suitable to meet your needs.

If you need to view any school in more detail please go to
[2]www.edubase.gov.uk if you need to talk to someone regarding this data
please don't hesitate to contact the EduBase Service desk on 0870 120 25

Dear Department for Education,

Thank you for the information you have provided, but I still really need the language information I requested.

I have seen tables of data in the past that seems to be able to split out students who have English as a first language and English as not their first language (ESL)? It also gave achievement levels for the 2 groups.

I basically just need data by primary & secondary, school type and LEA the numbers of students who have English as a first language and the number of students who have English as a second language (ESL).

I hope you can help me further as I need this data for a university assignment.

Yours faithfully,

Lisa Hayward
