Scheduled Ancient Monuments
Dear Sir or Madam,
Please could you provide me with a list of current Scheduled
Ancient Monuments.
For each monument in the list, the following information would be of interest:
a) the monument's name b) the monument's location (preferably as a six-figure OS grid reference) c) the monument's date of creation if known d) a brief summary of the reason the monument is regarded as important
Please could you provide this as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet if possible.
Yours faithfully,
Susan Davis
Dear Susan Davies
Thank you for your enquiry concerning Scheduled Ancient Monuments in
Wales. I have included a sample of a spreadsheet derived from our GIS
system, which provides data concerning the 4116 Scheduled Ancient
Monuments in Wales. The spreadsheet provides data such as the monument
name and the location (a six-figure National Grid Reference), as well as
other details such as 'site type'. I would be grateful if you would assess
this sample data and inform me whether this data is suitable for your
purpose. I can also provide a publication entitled 'What is Scheduling',
which provides the criteria for scheduling ancient monuments. These
criteria's may provide an explanation about the importance of Scheduled
Ancient Monuments and why they have been considered for designation.
We are currently developing a new database, that will be used to create
and manage our Scheduled Ancient Monuments data. Data concerning Scheduled
Ancient Monuments has been collected since 1884, the quality of this data
is varied and the data is not consistent for all 4116 monuments, however,
we aim to include data relating to a site's importance and scheduling date
in the new database. As a proof of concept, we have managed populate the
new database with the existing data. The next phase of the project is to
check that the database functionality and to ensure that the data has not
been compromised. It is envisaged that the database will contain a quality
assured dataset and a sophisticated querying and export functionality,
providing Cadw with the ability to provide extensive digital data to all
our customers.
I hope that the above will address your enquiry and I look forward to
hearing from you.
Yours sincerely
Vince Devine
