This request has been closed to new correspondence. Contact us if you think it should be reopened.

We're waiting for Alexandra Tieghi to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear University of Reading,

I request the following information under the Freedom of Information Act:

1) Breakdown of expected salaries, or average salaries for graduates from undergraduate degrees in years 2008/2009 to 2013/2014 included, by subject. If average salaries for recent EU (non-UK) or international (non-EU) graduates are available, I would like those to be shared as well.

2) Tuition fees charged to first-year international students for undergraduate degrees in years 2008/2009 to 2013/2014 included, broken down by subject.

Yours faithfully,

Alexandra Tieghi

IMPS, University of Reading

Dear Ms Tieghi,

We are writing to advise you that it has been necessary to refuse this
request under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
We estimate that compliance with your request would exceed the appropriate
costs limit established by section 12 of the Freedom of information Act
2000; this is currently set at £450 (or 18 hours work) by virtue of the
[1]Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees)
Regulations 2004. Our estimate has considered the time it would take to
determine whether we hold the information and then to locate, retrieve and
extract it.
We estimate that to determine whether we hold a ‘breakdown of expected
salaries, or average salaries for graduates from undergraduate degrees
number of first year undergraduate degrees by subject’ for years requested
2008/9 through to 20113/14, then to locate, retrieve, and extract that
information would take longer than 18 hours to complete.
The primary reason for why the appropriate limit would be exceeded, is
that the information requested for the years specified is not recorded
centrally in an easily searchable, aggregated format. The data for years
2008/09 through to 2010/11 is not recorded centrally in an easily
searchable, aggregated format and locating the data requested would take a
significant amount of manual checking. In order to locate the data
requested we would have to manually interrogate a very large volume of
records across various databases and spreadsheets within the requested
period, to establish the number of expected salaries for graduates from
undergraduate degrees by subject. For the time periods requested this
would involve manually retrieving and searching through thousands of
individual records and several databases.
We are sorry we cannot provide the requested information and would like to
offer some advice on how we may be able to provide information within the
appropriate limit. We may be able to complete a data return as requested
on the 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14 data sets only if you were to narrow a
request to this only.
We are however able to advise that information in respect of limb two is
exempt information on the basis of the following FOIA exemptions: s.21 -
information accessible to applicant by other means. You can find the
information you need at the following webpage:

We are required to include details of our complaints procedures, including
your rights to apply to the Information Commissioner.  The procedure is
detailed in our Freedom of Information and Environmental Information
Regulations policy on the web at

If we are unable to resolve any complaint, you can complain to the
Information Commissioner, the independent body who oversees the access to
information regimes:
