Safeguarding national security

The request was successful.

Dear University of Essex,

I read a previous report stating that the University has shared information with the police on the base of "Safeguarding National Security = 9 cases".

I am interested in the dates and months when such requests were received.

Why has the university complied with the request when it is not obliged to do it according to the law?

Were people informed when their information was shared?

I am also interested if I can obtain my personal file, where and how.

Yours faithfully,

P. Stanchev

Freedom Of Information Requests, University of Essex

Dear Petar

I am writing to respond to your recent request about security. I apologise
for the slight delay in responding.

The dates when we received police requests for personal information on the
grounds of safeguarding national security were May 2012, November 2012
(two requests), February, April, July and October 2013, and February and
April 2014.

Section 20 of the Data Protection Act specifically allows for sharing for
the prevention or detection of crime and the apprehension or prosecution
of offenders. Information is only released where the police provide the
proper paper work, as they did in this instance. Where there is any doubt
as to the legitimacy of release our Head of Security will liaise with the
Information Manager, who has responsibility for overseeing data protection
compliance.

Those involved were not informed when their information was shared.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have any questions about this
response do please contact me.

Regards

Sara
