Unfortunately we do not hold details of historic Charters awarded to
Farnham.  These would have been inherited by Waverley Borough Council on
the merging of the Farnham Urban District Council in 1974.

Many of the historic records are held in the Surrey History Centre 130
Goldsworth Rd, Woking GU21 6ND  01483 518737 and further details may be
held in Farnham Museum [1]38 West Street, Farnham GU9 7DX    01252
715094.  Other documents are known to be held by the Bishop of
Winchester’s archive since William Shotter, the last Bailiff of Farnham
was said to have handed over all the charters to Bishop  Brownlow North
when he resigned on 27th July 1789.

The earliest mention of Farnham is thought to be in a charter of c AD688
when Caedwalla, King of Wessex, gave land at Farnham to two or three monks
to enable them to found a ‘monasterium’.  In a further charter of
AD801-805 (by which time Farnham was held by the bishops of Winchester),
Bishop Ealhmund exchanged land in return for a honey-render of 10 jars
and  also for two nights board and lodging.

King John gave at least one charter (15^th December 1216) during his reign
including changing the market day to a Thursday. Charters are believed to
have been given by the Bishops of Winchester on 4^th February 1248
(William de Raley).  This was confirmed by John Gervase, Bishop of
Winchester in 1266 and Henry Cardinal Beaufort on 19 March 1410.  A new
charter of incorporation was issued in 1566 creating a new municipal
body.  (2 Bailiffs and 12 burgesses initially nominated by the Bishops of
Winchester) Details of these can be found in the book Farnham and its
Borough by Rev R N Milford (1859)

In terms of Coats of Arms, the first was issued to the Farnham Urban
District Council (Granted 11th October 1950) and the second to Farnham
Town Council on 3^rd December 1986

Urban District Council

ARMS: Vert a Castle with three towers Or on a Chief Argent a Mitre of the
first garnished of the second between a Sprig of Oak and a Sprig of Hop
both fructed of the field.
CREST: On a Wreath of the Colours, in front of a Stag's Head affrontée
proper issuant from six Ears of Wheat fesswise three to the dexter and
three to the sinister Or a stone headed Axe also proper and a Pastoral
Staff Gold in saltire.

Motto 'BY WORTH'.

The castle was built in 1138  by Henry de Blois, Bishop of Winchester, and
the mitre and pastoral staff refer to Farnham’s long associations with the
Bishops of Winchester and Guildford. The green field, the stag's head, and
the oak refer to the parks and woodlands of the area. The oak also links
to the arms of the County Council.  The ears of wheat stand for
agriculture, and the sprig of hops for produce for which Farnham was
formerly famous. The stone axe alludes to the prehistoric antiquities of
the district.
The motto is derived from the name of John Byworth, one of the town's
benefactors. He was a clothier and presented the town in 1623 with the
"Byworth Cup".

I attach a photograph of each of the coats of arms.  If you require any
additional information, please let me know.
