I spent some time interfacing with Swindon council's annoying accounts system, registered an account using the request email address, but found no update to any case in it. I don't know what that was about.

Dear Customer Services,

Dear Ceri Stephens,
Thanks for the response. Think there are a few more roundabouts, such as Spittleborough (J16) and J 15 for example, but this gives an idea of costs which , to all intents and purposes is probably not seen as prohibitive, even if running costs doubled these figures. However I contend that there is the cost to each motorist to consider as they are forced to sit at a red light when the way is clear (not to mention the physical cost to the environment through pollutants from vehicles that are made to idle unnecessarily) and the frustration this causes.

As Swindon has always seemed to put itself in a position of pioneering schemes it would be great to see the council switch traffic lights on only at peak times. And , whereas you would not know up front just how much this would save on running costs, I'm sure all motorists would agree this would certainly save their sanity!
I'm sure I and the rest of the readers would be interested to hear if you would consider at least a trial period for this.

Yours sincerely,

Steve Reynolds

Michael Best, Swindon Borough Council

Mr Reynolds,

The two sites on at M4 Junction 15 and Junction 16 were not included in the list as they are maintained and operated by Highways England and not Swindon Borough Council this is because they are on the trunk network.

Of the roundabouts in Swindon two are part time, Mannington Roundabout and Bruce Street Bridges. Unfortunately the other roundabouts Coate Water Roundabout, Meads Roundabout and Greenbridge roundabout all have pedestrian crossings as part of their sequence. And under current legislation part time traffic signals are not permitted to have a pedestrian phase.
