Rosyth Dockyard buried radioactive waste- Carbon 14

Ministry of Defence did not have the information requested.

Dear Ministry of Defence,

The MOD has previously said that radioactive waste has been buried at Rosyth Dockyard

"The Very Low Level Radioactive Waste (VLLW) pit is located on the Rosyth Dockyard site. The volume of the disposal pit is approximately 942 cubic metres.

A total activity is estimated to have been approximately 33 GBq of Co-60 deposited between September 1968 and March 1979. By October 2003 approximately 9.3 GBq of Co-60 was estimated to remain. Upon closure the pits were covered with soil with a concrete cap laid on top and a further quantity of soil."

Could you please tell me if Carbon14 was present in the radioactive waste buried at Rosyth Dockyard and if so how much Carbon 14 is present.

Assuming Carbon 14 is present could you please provide me with details of the calculations and assumptions used to arrive a the figure and also information about the statistical uncertainty of the figure.

Yours faithfully,

Fred WP Dawson
