Ross Thomson taking money

House of Commons did not have the information requested.

Dear House of Commons,

Recently my former MP Ross Thomson (Aberdeen South), was relieved of his seat in Parliament. I wish to know if he received severance or as some people call a “golden handshake”, upon leaving as a MP. If he was offered this money, please tell me if he refused this payment or asked for it to be given to a charity or other cause. I also wish to know the amount.

Yours faithfully,

Sean Ashley

Dear Mr Ashley,

Freedom of Information request F19-584

Thank you for your request for information dated 24 November 2019,
received by us on the 25 November 2019, which is copied below.

When a General Election is called, Parliament is dissolved and there is no
‘House of Commons’ for the purposes of the Freedom of Information 2000 Act
(FOIA). As a result, there is no public authority to which the 20-working
day response deadline can apply. The time limits are therefore suspended
during the period of dissolution and resume when the House of Commons
first meets following the General Election.

As your request was received during the dissolution period, the 20-working
day time limit will commence when the House returns after the General
Election, which will be a date – yet to be agreed – sometime after the
Election itself.

Further information about the FOIA and Dissolution can be found on our web
pages here:
[1]http://www.parliament.uk/site-informatio...
.

In the meantime, if you have any queries about your request, please
contact us quoting the request number above and in the subject line of
this email.

Yours sincerely,

Sarah Price

Dear Mr Ashley,

Freedom of Information Request F19-584

Thank you for your request for information as copied below. You have asked
the House of Commons for information regarding severance pay offered to
former MP Mr Ross Thomson and any potential refusal of this payment or
request it be donated elsewhere.

This information is not held by the House of Commons. The Independent
Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) is responsible for paying MPs’
salaries and processing expenses claims. Therefore you may wish to
consider contacting IPSA whose details can be found at:
[1]http://www.theipsa.org.uk/.

It may help you to know that, rather than being “relieved of his seat”, on
3 November 2019 Mr Thomson announced he would not be standing for
re-election. The House of Commons publishes guidance for Members not
standing at the General Election, which can be found here:
[2]https://www.parliament.uk/documents/comm....
Some general information about salary and expenses claims is detailed on
pages 32 to 41, although IPSA may be able to provide the actual details
you have requested, as advised.

You may, if dissatisfied with the handling of your request, complain to
the House of Commons. Alternatively, if you are dissatisfied with the
outcome of your request you may ask the House of Commons to conduct an
internal review of any decision regarding your request.  Complaints or
requests for internal review should be addressed to: Information Rights
and Information Security Service, Research & Information Team, House of
Commons, London SW1A 0AA or [3][House of Commons request email].  Please ensure
that you specify the full reasons for your complaint or internal review
along with any arguments or points that you wish to make.

If you remain dissatisfied, you may appeal to the Information Commissioner
at Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF,
[4]www.ico.gov.uk.

Yours sincerely,
