Dear Greater Manchester Police,

I am collating statistics from all 43 police forces in England and Wales regarding the surge in
‘Romance Fraud’, that is, fraud committed by targeting and preying on vulnerable women. Please the below BBC article for reference. On many occasions fraud is committed under the Fraud Act 2006 where the perpetrator obtains a gain and the victim a loss.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-4863...

Additionally, perpetrators create and utilise fake accounts on certain dating sites and begin intimate relationships with their targets where no notifiable crime is committed under NCRS.

Using your search filters, could you please provide the following information under the FOIA?

Number of notifiable crimes under heading, including any reports of rape subject to a crime report for:

2014 - 15 / 2015 - 16 / 2016 - 17 / 2017 - 18 / 2018 - 2019

Number of non crime incidents, including rape for:

2014 - 15 / 2015 - 16 / 2016 - 17 / 2017 - 18 / 2018 - 2019

Yours faithfully,

Scott Winters.

Greater Manchester Police

Good morning Scott,

Thank you for your email. In regards to your below FOI request I would
require further clarification.

Action Fraud assumed responsibility for recording all fraud offences from
1st April 2013, therefore you would need to contact them to get
information about fraud.

As you require information about other types of crime, we would need you
to provide a list of keywords for us to include in a search, as we don’t
have any ‘search filters’ that would allow us to identify “Romance Fraud -
Fraud – Catfishing”.

If you could provide a list of key words to search for that would greatly
assist.

As a result of seeking this clarification, your request has currently been
placed on hold until I hear back from you. If I don't hear from you by
17/09/19 I will assume you no longer wish to continue with your request
and it will be cancelled accordingly.

Kind regards,
