Tim Fairclough,

Dear Mr Hutchinson

Thank you for your email of 15 February (below) requesting an internal review of this Department’s handling of your FOI request ‘Road Salting Policy’. I have been appointed as the reviewing officer.

The answer to your original request is that this Department does not hold information on road salting policy. That is a matter for the Department for Transport and I understand that they have replied to you on this matter.

I have reviewed how your request to this Department was handled. I have found that we made three attempts to transfer your request to the Department for Transport on 21 January, 25 January and 2 February. However, unfortunately, the relevant team within that Department did not respond.

Clearly, it would have been better if:

• we had chased the Department for Transport more effectively for a response; and / or
• we had explained to you that your request was not a matter for us as soon as it was established that it was the responsibility of the Department of Transport. That was made clear to our case officer on 21 January.

So I can only apologise on behalf of the Department that your request was not better handled.

If you are not content with the outcome of your complaint, you may apply directly to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). The ICO can be contacted at:
